Dorm "must haves"

I noticed when we visited the dorms that most kids raise their beds and put those plastic storage cubes underneath. The closets looked pretty small and some had storage cubes on the top shelf in there also.

Any other "must haves" to make the most of the small space?

How many towels and set of sheets do most kids bring?

mumo, I think that there are whole threads dedicated to that somewhre in the Parents Forum message boards:

fyi…I just called Residence Hall Linens, which is the company that offers the “Value Paks” for dorm rooms. The bedsheets are listed as being “cotton percale”. Upon questioning the percent cotton in the sheets, I was informed that they are actually 60/40 cotton/polyester. I suggested they change the fabric description in the brochure, since I think it’s misleading to say cotton percale, when they are not 100% cotton. Then she informed me that you can purchase 100% cotton sheets for an upcharge. Caveat Emptor!

Can you imagine sleeping on polyester sheets? Yuk.

Anyone looking for memory foam mattress pads, I found an XL twin on Overstock.com for half the price I saw it in the stores. I hear it helps if your son or daughter happens to get a lousy mattress.
