dorm necessities

Just about to start looking for dorm stuff- underbed storage boxes.. and all that other stuff- can anyone give some websites or stores where they ahd the best luck- Target, BBB, WM .....

I just happened to stop by our local Bed Bath and Beyond today. They have a good inventory of the back to college stuff. They have a large variety of sizes of plastic contaners- the stackable drawers looked particularly useful- though I did not buy any yet.

They also had a pretty good selection of Xl twin mattress pads and I did buy one of those very lofty padded ones using my BBB 20% off coupon! [Therapedic™ 500 Mattress Pad, 100% Cotton, 500 Thread Count - Bed Bath & Beyond](http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?SKU=126591&RN=559&)

I am also thinking about buying a foam mattress topper to layer under the mattress pad- those dorm mattresses are pretty uncomfortable, I hear-- but the ones they had at BBB did not look that great for the money. Amazon.com does have quite a few such as this one. [Amazon.com: Soft Sleeper 5.5 Twin XL 2 inch Visco Elastic Memory Foam Mattress Pad, Bed Topper: Home & Garden](http://www.amazon.com/Soft-Sleeper-Visco-Elastic-Memory/dp/B0016GBGBO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1307015088&sr=1-1)

Do you live near an IKEA? Planning to check our local IKEA for cheap and colorful decorative items- maybe a throw rug and some pillows.

You need a laptop, a cell phone from a carrier that actually gets decent reception on your campus, one fitted sheet in the correct size, and a two-week supply of underwear and socks (double that if you like to go to the gym). Nothing else matters all that much.

If you have a Kohls in your area they have a great buy one/get one sale on 3" mattress pads that are very nice. In addition to a 30% coupon for CC holders this weekend :)

Where did you get the Kohl’s coupon?

^^Kohl’s coupons come in the mail if you have a Kohl’s credit card, and I think you have to have a credit card to use them. I never really shopped there until my sister convinced me it’s worth getting the card just to get the discounts. They’re giving Kohl’s cash this weekend for everyone–$10 to use on future purchases for every $50 you spend.

Does anyone know where I can find top and bottom sheets sold separately? All I see are sets. My daughter just got back from Germany, and she’s in love with the comforter only arrangement (comforter cover, no top sheet). We don’t need XL.

If this is what she wants…get her a duvet with a removable (and washable) cover. It’s a LOT easier to wash than the WHOLE “comforter” and is usually what is used in Europe.

Agreed with Marian…“necessities” for dorms are highly overrated. This is marketing…these stores make it seem impossible to live without the LONG list of dorm “necessities” that they sell.

^^Esp. if you have boys. Neither of my S’s was the least bit interested in all those “necessities”. They went with a mattress pad, one set of sheets, one pillow, a comforter, two towels, toiletries, a bottle of detergent, clothes for the weather (did not take winter clothes in Aug.), a laptop computer and wall posters. The one non-necessity that they both had and really enjoyed/used a lot was a small futon. Beds were either lofted or bunked so there was room for it.

never seen sheets sold separately before- but a company here has the flat sheet with fitted ends so you don’t have to tuck in - $55 for set

Home Goods and TJ Max are good places to buy decent sheets cheaply. They may or may not have non-sets, but if the price is low enough, it won’t matter if you actually use the top sheet. And you can always use it as a drop cloth or something. :)

Other than that, The Company Store seems to have the best quality at the best price, especially if you get something on sale. I find B,B& B generally over-priced.

Walmart sells sheets of all kinds of solid color separately if you can’t find them anywhere else.

Macys sells sheets separately. Also Lands End which is available by catalog or in some Sears stores.

Target sells lots of sheets separately .

A FAN. We’re going to try the “tower” style, which will take up less space.

D wants to bring lots of DVDs. I think we’ll put them in a sleeve case, rather than bring the boxes.

Other than that, she’s just thinking bedding, towels, clothes and basic desk/electronic supplies. Noise-cancelling headphones, too - she’s in a triple.

The Company Store sells fitted only XL and regular sheets. Sometimes they have them in their clearance section as well.

thanks- what about bed bug protector and sprays? a freind just mentioned that she bought some at BBB

Thanks for the sheets advice. I’ll try Macys and Sears. I forgot to mention we like 100% cotton. That rules out Walmart.

Bed Bath & Beyond sells separate sheets, I think most stores do, I’ve never had a problem finding them.

Love seeing people posting about not taking much. I have a S who feels the same way. Am still trying to convince him that he’ll want a fridge/microwave…msged another mom who’s D lived in same dorm and highly suggested the frige/microwave. So we’ll see. Only 6 weeks until we leave to take him to Univ of Penn.
