Dorm or home?

HIII i live in the Los Angeles area
from my house to UCI takes about 45 mins if no traffic but about 1.5 hrs if traffic jams
soo should i stay home (which would save me tons of $$) or at dorms????
anyone from LA going to UCI???

DORM!!! Trust me. This is an experience you don’t want to miss out on. The friendships you make in the dorms will last a lifetime, and the lessons you learn will help you in the future. Money is always the excuse for people not wanting to dorm, but why else are you going to college? For money. It may seem like a lot, but its so damn worth it. Whenever I go home (and I live in SB county which is 45 minutes away), I miss the dorm life so damn much.

I agree dorm. And actually depending on your major you may be spending a ton of a time at UCI.

Dorms, it will be way too hard on you if you commute, especially if you will be just a freshman. Driving just adds unnecessary stress, and especially if you are coming from an area that will guarantee heavy traffic…

yeah i think i should stay at the dorm
do u guys know how many roommates u get to have???
do u get to pick?? what if i donno anyone who will attend to UCI?

For dorms, the max you people you live WITH is 2 people, (Triple room).

You get to pick as long as they put your name down on the app as well.

If you don’t know anyone, then you get random roommate(s).

People who live in a triple pay less… around 500 less per quarter.

In Middle Earth, you can get a quad, but those are randomly assigned. I live in a triple. Its best to go random. I picked friends from high school. Worst idea ever. They’re disgusting pigs that always make a mess and never clean up after themselves. I’m known to have the dirtiest room in the hall and its not fair because I clean it everyday but those introverted bastards keep ruining it. You can smell the damn room OUTSIDE of the hall! I hate them now.

@TwinsFishy: I’m in the same situation as you are!

However, after reading SemperFudge’s remark, I think I’m going with off campus housing. lol

not everybody is going to have the same experience dorming and i would still recommend dorming over off-campus housing; you have your other 3 years to choose to live off campus. i’ve heard it is better to select randoms over high school friends because friendships can be ruined when you spend too much time with someone and learn ALL of their bad habits that you may not be compatible with.

assume 1.25hours travel time each way… that’s 2.5 hours a day, if you’re in class 4 times a week… that’s 10 hours a week. That’s 40.3 hours a month. Plus fuel
it’d be more effective to live on campus and work a little to make up the cash difference. Work experience is also good for getting a real job AFTER you get your degree.

of course this doesn’t factor in food…

I’ll be commuting myself, but I only live 5 miles away.

I live 30 min away from UCI, and if I choose to go there I would have to commute
But I want to live in a dorm just to experience it! Considering I’m going to be a freshman!

How much do dorms normally cost per semester?

they cost around 3000-4000 a quarter, depending on meal plans and single/double/triple rooms.

Do you pay by the quarter?

Yes you pay by the quarter

you can check this site to see the current rates:
[UC Irvine Student Housing - Housing Rates](http://www.housing.uci.edu/rates.asp)

Does anyone know when we get to choose which dorm we want? I turned in my housing application and the $20 but i dont remember choosing if i wanted mesa or middle earth

The housing apps will come later, prob towards the end of may or middle of june? Can’t remember 100%
