Dorm Purchases?

I haven't checked all over the site so forgive me if this is a repeat question.

As my daughter gets ready for college, I'm wondering what items we may not think of that parents recommend we bring in to a new dorm room situation (generally speaking).

Thanks

If your daughter already knows which college she will be attending, you may find it helpful to ask this question in the subforum for that school.
Generally speaking, it depends on how far from home she will be and whether it’s easy to rotate items as the seasons change.

In the ‘Parent Cafe’ Forum there is a sticky thread just for this! The thread was started in 2005. On the first post there are links to several previous lists. You may want to look at those, then scroll through the last few pages. There will certainly be updated things that may not have applied in the earlier lists.

Good luck! Many of us will be right there with you very soon. Start saving those Bed Bath & Beyond coupons. They take the expired ones! :)

Bed, Bath and Beyond had a database with many college lists (and rules–forbidden items) on it when DD was getting ready a couple of years ago. That is handy.

The ONE item we got on a whim and DD LOVED it (and lots of friends did the same after they saw hers) was a chair pad she put on her desk chair in her dorm room. We were at BBB and we saw it…and thought is was worth a whirl. She said it was SO nice to have a comfy seat. Everything else we bought was what you would regularly think kids need.

Earplugs and a sleep mask. Essential for dorm sleeping, even if your child is a heavy sleeper. Also, get a package of earplugs because they are like socks in a dryer, they can mysteriously go missing.

Usually, colleges send a packet of information to students who have placed deposits. In the packet is a list of items that students may want to bring with them to school.

Many schools have a giant rummage sale on Freshman Move In Day .You can get great stuff very cheaply -rugs ,notebooks ,storage boxes ,etc. We have filled in afterwards with Bed & Bath !!

Something that my D laughed at when I bought it - and now wouldn’t be without - is her Krups electric water kettle. Another mom on CC had recommended it a few years ago (I found it in the thread in the Parent Cafe forum) and she was right on target! Not only did D love it, but everyone on her floor used it too.

Check first…these were prohibited at BOTH of my kids’ schools.

Noise canceling headphones. They are my best friend.

rachelfran: it really depends on what type of dorm situation your child will be in. Will they be in a typical double with the bathroom down the hall? Microfridge? Or will they be in a supersuites situation with their own bedroom, a shared bath, kitchen & living room?

Boy or girl? Boys are notorious for wanting to show up with 1 set of sheets & a pillow, while some girls like to coordinate all their bedding, window & wall coverings with their new roommate. Will your daughter want to coordinate with her roommate if she’s in a double?

I am guessing that after the Super Bowl tonight, my daughter will be wishing she had these. She lives too close to where Pittsburgh celebrations are held!
