I had mentioned to my son that the northeast dorms were close to the science buildings...his major is physics. When he visited last fall he had talked to another student that lived in Sylvan. He seemed to really like it there and recommended it to ny son. Any opinions about Sylvan and Northeast would be appreciated. I had read on another post that Sylvan wasn't a great place to live....granted these were threads from 4 yrs ago though. He likes quiet and but I don't want him to feel isolated from the rest of the campus.

My S, who lived in both, preferred Northeast over Sylvan.

They are different styles - Sylvan is suites (although half the rooms are doubles and half singles) vs. doubles with communal bathrooms on each floor. For freshmen IMO the Northeast style promotes greater interaction with people in your dorm.

@notrichenough thanks for answering. Wish we could go to open house this month. He visited last fall but it would be nice for him to look around as an “accepted” student knowing he will be living there. Trying to gear him towards aread that seem a little more social but in the end I can only offer my opinion, the decision is his.

My son (engineering major and a quiet kid) lived in Crabtree (northeast) as a freshman, then Sylan junior and senior years, now is in Johnson (northeast) his senior year. He liked having the single in a suite in Sylvan. A lot of transfers in Sylvan and he made a lot of friends that way (i.e. random transfer students as suite mates). Senior year he and one of his new friends decided to move back to Northeast because its a little closer to everything. For a freshman I’d recommend. I recommend living in a RAP if you have the chance, my son freshman year was in the Engineering RAP

Northeast would be better for freshman.
