I couldn't find any threads discussing the dorm amenities... What is in the actual dorm besides a bed frame and a desk?

A mirror, 2 trash cans, 2 desk chairs, 2 dressers, an overhead light which is really horrendously bad...I think that's pretty much it in terms of what's in there when you get there.

not just a bed frame though, you get a mattress too. Although, I suggest buying like a $10 mattress pad. The mattresses can range from good to old and creaky

get an egg crate bed thingy...you knwo what i mean. they're awesome.

Just to build on some of the previous questions:

By any chance, do the trash cans that come in the dorm rooms come with tops? I'm just really nitpicky about having that lol.

It mentioned that the overhead light that comes with the room is pretty crappy. Would one suggest bringing a room lamp or will my own desk lamp be just fine? The most I ever plan on ever having light for is to study.

That's pretty much it.

Nope. Sorry, they don't come with lids.

I'd recommend getting a floor lamp. They have good ones at Wal-mart for like 30 bucks, so it's not like it's a huge investment. I had just my desk lamp and the dingy room light for a while, and my room always felt dim and disgusting. The floor lamp gave my room "new life."

i had a floor lamp but rarely used it because of the heat it gave off. during the hot months, in a non-a/c dorm, i couldn't handle extra electronics...i did use it, though, in the cooler months

this may sound dumb, but are there desks included with the desk chairs? i'd assume so, but I don't want a surprise on the 22nd.

haha yes of course. There's a desk with a big shelving unit on top.

FYI, most of the freshmen dorms come with semi-lofted beds, so if you're short, bring a footstool, unless you plan to unloft them which is time-consuming and decreases your storage space greatly.

Umm, I don't remember seeing or sleeping in any semi-lofted bed last year. I actually bought risers because my bed was only about 8 inches off the ground.

Yeah, not all of the beds were semi-lofted last year. I know Giles had them, and I know that Pegram and Alspaugh didn't. I'm not sure what it will be like this year.

hey, thanks for all the replies. I've been considering bringing a TV down, and was wondering how much cable is... and if the bill was per month/semester/year?

Last year it was around $32 a month. Not cheap, but if you're going to use it it's worth it. You can get things like HBO and stuff for like, $42/$52 a month.

Yea, since it's pretty expensive for what you get, not that many people on my hall had cable. We usually just gathered in someone's room to watch something.

Are the dorms wireless in Duke? are all the dorms not air conditioned?

Dorms are wireless in commons and study rooms, otherwise you have to use the ethernet outlet. The only east dorms with air conditioning are randolph and blackwell, although you can request a unit for any dorm if you have "allergies"

belltower also has AC and i think GA does too (not sure on GA).

if you're in a room in a close vacinity to a wireless router you can use it. i was right across from the study room and never plugged into the ethernet outlet. the only time i did was when i was doing something very inmportant (i.e. class registration). also, some peole have their own wireless router that you'll be able to use.

wow, that is pretty expensive. can i use the student advantage card? just kidding...
