Dorm question

Can anyone tell me if there are shelves above the desks in the dorm rooms? If so, are they attached to the wall or hutch type attached to the desk?

It depends on the dorm - some have bookshelves, some have shelving on the walls. Most of the desks have one hutch/shelf that sits on top.

When you find out what dorm your S or D is in, we can give you a better guess (though there may have been changes made over the summer).

I can tell you that in Wharton, my son had an actual piece of furniture separate from his desk. As I recall, there was also one bookshelf built right into the desk.
As Harriet said, when your child has the dorm assignment let us know.

Guess we will find out in August. (D is very excited to find out about her dorm and roommate!) Do most dorms have closets with a door or an armoire?

:) Same answer - it depends. Actually that one can vary within the dorm, too. Most dorm rooms have closets with doors, though.

Has your D played around with the housing page, on the website? You and she can look at dorm floor plans there.

Yes, she has looked at all the dorm layouts. It seems as though freshman can be in many dorms, so who knows where she will end up. She hopes for a non-party - substance free dorm, if such exists. A potential English major, she is also very interested in theatre and music, if they group them according to interests.

Right, first year students can end up almost anywhere. There is no substance-free dorm, and they're not really grouped by interest, in the sense of a drama-interest hall or a group of debaters. Still, in my experience as a student and as a parent, I've been impressed by the thinking that goes into the housing deans/staff's choices. Chances are very good your D will find a lot of kids with intersecting interests close by.

The wait until August is hard, especially as most of her friends are probably already finding out their dorm and roommate assignments.

Yes, the wait until August is torture! Her best friend will be a freshman at Penn and already knows her dorm and roommate. Still, she is enjoying her summer and realizes how quickly it will go by.
