Dorm question

How is the dorm set up at Berkeley?
Which buildings that are coed, single gender..
capacity of buildings, type of people in the buildings ( sports-oriented, a majority of a major, etc.)

And, how close do you tend to get with the members of your dorms?

Lastly, do you guys have dorm parties often, or is it more of a quite place to study?

Stern = All girls
Bowles = All guys
All the other units have about one floor that is single-sex. Everything else not mentioned is coed.

Clark Kerr = Sports-oriented
Foothill = Engineering-oriented

I have /heard/, notice “heard”, that Units 1, 2, and 3 bond the most with their members of their dorm. Foothill and other dorms usually have their doors closed and don’t talk much with their floormates.

Dorm parties? It tends to get pretty loud, but it’s usually for only an hour or so and then it quiets down a bit. It’s easy to study inside the dorms, but if you really want a quiet place to study, Units 1, 2, and 3 have an underground library where you can study (or just go to Moffitt).

Hope that helps! :)

I can answer some of your questions, but I’m only an out of state prospective student, so my answers don’t have much depth.

The dorms are set up as a random lottery draw, with a survey component AFAIK.

Units 1, 2 & 3 are on the south side, right in the city (<2 minutes to campus), and are basically highrises of dorms. Some floors are single gender, some coed, and all the rooms are single gender rooms. They seem to be the most crowded/lively, each containing thousands of students.

Clark Kerr is SE of campus, and home to the athletes. They are generally much larger, and more Spanish-esque style. Also they’re really close to the sport practice fields & stadium, but about a 5-7 minute walk to campus. You pass all the Greek houses on the walk there too.

On the north, there’s Bowles, the all male dorm right next to the engineering school, and near there is the all female dorm. This part of campus is not really active, as the engineering students are some of the most studious on campus. These dorms are bigger than the Units, but smaller than Clark Kerr.

I’m a big fan of the Units myself, because I’m not a big fan of sports, yet still like to be really active.

My friend in foothill tries to make friends, but she keeps on saying that everybody there is very antisocial and seeing as she is always very happy and talkative it is very surprising that her only friend is her roommate. I live in Unit 3 and I love it!!! Sure the rooms are smaller, but Its not insane. People in the units enjoy company and interacting with others. Their only priority is not just school, but to also make friends.

unit 3 .ftw.
