Dorm Questions! Please Help Me!

Hello! In the dorms on McCormick Road, what exactly is the microwave/fridge situation? Must you have a microfridge, or can you have a microwave and a fridge? Do you have to have an allocator if you choose the latter? Some places say that you can have either a microwave or a fridge - so like just pick one of them - or that you can have a microfridge, or I have also read (and seen pictures) where both were used separately. Please let me know!

Secondly, what is the bookshelf situation? I have read that they say that there is a bookshelf. How large? What does it look like? Where is it in the room, etc?

Thirdly, as far as I know, the rooms are assigned and you are either A1 or A2. Does this mean A1 has the bed on the left (supposing you are standing in the doorway looking into the room) and A2 on the right? Or do those numbers not matter?

Fourthly, what about storage/drawer space? Are those stackable drawers a good idea, and if so, where would they go? Just outside in the room? I mean, where is there room to keep all of your (and your roommate's) clothes? Any tips/hints in this matter?

Fifthly, what about lighting? Do you suggest bringing multiple lamps to escape having to use the flourescent lighting? Like a floor lamp and a desk lamp?

Sixthly, fans. Are they typically kept in the window? Is just a boxy one that sits there in the window the best one to get? Or would a standing & rotating one be better?

Ahh, so much to think about! Please, anyone who has some experience in those rooms, would you lend me a hand? Help and advice would be most appreciated.

Oh yea, and about television. Recommended or not? Is it just one more thing to find space for, or do you find that a tv is really a helpful thing? Thanks so much!!

Why didn't you go look at the sample rooms? I don't have many answers, but I heard that A1 or A2 doesn't matter. My roomie rented fridge only, so you can rent them separately. When I was at orientation I saw a microfridge rental rate, so you can rent that together as well. I personally would suggest a desk lamp and floor lamp. Don't want to have to move your desk lamp around your side when your roommate's asleep. There ARE pictures online you know. =)

I lived in Lefevre last year.

You can have a microwave and refridgerator separately without an allocator. The bookshelf is a small shelf on the wall above your desk. The numbers after the room number are meaningless. There are three drawers underneath your bed, three drawers with your desk, and a closet for your storage and clothing. The stackable drawers are good for extra stuff like non-perishable food and paper. Bring a desk lamp. You'll need it if you have an all-nighter and your roomate wants some sleep. Box fans are typical and should reside on the window. I prefer the rotating one right next to my desk chair. Definitely bring a television period.

yes - i recommend bringing a microwave and fridge - because you can get them for about the same price as renting one from the university.

Actually, I think there are 6 drawers under your bed - although i could be wrong.

The closet in the "old" old dorms is very small. the closet in the "newer" old dorms is built into the wall and has drawers and such if i recall.

you and your rooomate should both bring a box fan, as 2 fit perfectly in the window.

I'm in old dorms too this year and to all your questions this is what I am ready for, but it can be different depending on what you want:
-They say you're supposed to have an allocator if you have a microwave and a refigerator, but I'm just going to ignore that. I don't think it is something they are going to look for, because it's kind of a dumb idea.
-You have a "bookshelf" on the wall above your desk. It is an ok size, not very big, with a top and bottom shelf. Your desk also has a shelf on top of it. You can see pictures of this stuff online on the housing site, I think. I'm putting a bookcase behind my bed too- I won't be able to use some of the lower shelves (at least get to them easily), but at least it adds room.
-Everyone else said A1 and A2 are meaningless, I figured it was for mailing purposes, but maybe it is absolutely meaningless. Anyway, you get to choose whichever bed you want. Get there first or something.
-You have 6 drawers under your bed. I think people on your hall will probably frown upon putting stuff outside of your room...and even if they didn't, I wouldn't reccomend it, that's just asking for problems. You could probably shove stackable drawers somewhere, like in the space between your beds or something.
-I'm bringing a floor lamp, I'd reccomend it but you might find that they take up room. I'm also bringing a desk lamp and definitely reccomend it. I have a little fan for my desk too- so it can blow straight on me :)
-For fans I have 2 box fans for the window. If you put one blowing air into your room and one blowing air out of your room it sets up sort of one huge fan for your whole room, it works well. I also have a standing fan for the room. In my opinion, you can't really have too many fans at first.
-I'm bringing a tv, and I would tell anyone to bring a tv, but some people could care less, so thats based on what you want.

There is only one small closet that you have to share. One thing I saw a lot of were thin shelving units- you could slide the headboard of the bed out from the wall and put a shelving unit there and put a lamp on it.
