I will be a freshman at UT in the fall, and am wanting to hopefully live in a smaller, quieter dorm. I don't really want to live in San Jac because of how extremely quiet its supposed to be, but I'm also thinking jester may be too crazy for me. So, I've been looking into Moore-Hill and Prather/Roberts/Brackenridge, does anybody know if there is a good amount of freshmen in these dorms, too? I don't want to be in a dorm that is predominantly upperclassmen, either! Any advice helps :-)

Thanks in advance!

Jester is not “crazy”…

I have heard that jester is very loud and that there are a lot of parties, etc.

Not true… at least not in the hallways. There’s usually a lot of stuff going on in the “main” part of the buildings (with the cafeterias and gathering spaces), but the hallways are pretty much like any other building, or even quieter.

well that’s good to know, thanks for the info. I’ve heard only a few things about each dorm and I guess I shouldn’t go off of what just a couple people say.

But I would still try to avoid Jester. The rooms are definitely not the nicest x.x

I am looking for the same type of dorm and I am hoping for Moorehill Plus if i were there, it would give me more motivation to go to the gym lol

Whats your major ?

Jester has geographical perks (near the library, gym, and business school).

But as TexRose said, the rooms aren’t the “nicest”–in Jester West, the furniture is old and non-removable (think sliding, “couch bed”). Also, in both Jester West and East, every time your neighbor forgets to close his/her door in a courteous manner, there’s a large slamming sound that’s bound to wake you up if you’re sleeping…

Also, your neighbors can be a nuisance also (e.g., blasting music at 3am on multiple occasions). I personally never trusted my neighbors…my roommate left his shampoo bottle in the shower, and it was stolen…

TexRose - Moore-Hill does seem like the perfect sort of middle-of-the-road dorm, as far as the atmosphere, I’m hoping I get to live there I also really like the location, right near jester which has the dining hall! Hopefully it will be cozy and more close knit than somewhere like jester which is so huge. These are all preconceived thoughts though considering, sadly, Moore-Hill doesn’t give tours same with PBR. I’m majoring in social work as of now!

1314eternal - thank you for the tips. I’m a little concerned about, as you mentioned, security in whichever dorm I end up in. After all, at first I’ll be living around strangers who I barely know… Any tips on how to keep valuables in my dorm room safe?

thanks guys!

Locking your doors should suffice. Maintenance is installing drawer locks in the Honors Quad drawers too (the Honors Quad is relatively safe though).

I wish every room had locked drawers!

All you need to do to keep your valuables safe is to bring 1 or 2 locks. At San Jacinto, one of the chest drawers is lockable. My son thinks there is a lockable drawer or cabinet in Jester. If not, you can always lock your stuff in a duffle bag or suitcase.

Door slamming sounds are in San Jac as well. :)

good idea, thank you sunnydayfun!
