Dorm questions

Hi, will I need to bring a printer, bookshelf, desk, and/or chairs for Princeton? I'll be in Dodge-Osborn hall at Wilson College in a 8 person suite. I'll be bringing a laptop and taking ORFE, math, science, and Compsci classes (if that matters)

There is free printing in the computer clusters (the closest ones to you in D-O are 1937 and Wilcox). You don't really need to bring furniture like desks or bookshelves, they are provided by the Housing Dept. In an 8-person suite you are going to want to coordinate with your roommates to furnish your big common room.

some people like to bring their own desk chairs. The one that princeton provides are fine, but not very exciting. Some dorms come with bookcases, others don't. You won't know until you get there whether you have one or not.

A printer is useful. The printers in Wilcox can be broken or overwhelmed with jobs during the busiest times of year (and the times where you would want to use the printers the most!) Printing stuff in your dorm room will save you some time. And the paper cost is free; just take a clump from any printing area back to your room; you're doing them a favor. You save the university from using their printer ink, which is the most expensive maintenance part of a printer.

Good idea, Cibbir.

If I have a small, two-shelf bookcase at home already, should I just bring it since I have room in my car and might end up needing it?

Also, does anyone know if the rooms in Holder can fit one of those little four-drawer clear plastic dressers, like the ones you get from Ikea? Or for that matter, does anyone know what sort of clothes storage Rocky provides? Closet, dresser, drawers, shelves, etc...?

in holder the university will provide a bookcase, I'm pretty sure. They started adding bookcases to room furniture about 3-4 years ago. Since Holder was totally redone in that time, the rooms should have bookcases. You should be able to see from the floorplan if you have a closet. The rooms in holder that I have been in have wardrobes instead of closets, but I don't know if thats typical. The wardrobe will have some hanging space and also two drawers at the bottom. The university also provides a dresser. It is likely that you will be able to fit an extra small dresser.

Thanks so much!! That was really helpful : )

If you're in a suite you should think about bringing couches and chairs (and maybe a coffee table?) more than desks (they're provided). The common rooms are basically unfurnished so you'll probably want to bring some furniture. Also you can bring small fridges but no microwaves (though you can rent a micro-fridge - that's the only legal way to have one)

My D will be in a quad (2 bedrooms with living room) in Campell. Does anyone know whether the beds will be bunked and whether there will be bookcases. All 4 girls are coming from afar so i doubt will be bringing much in the way of furniture.

If there is enough room you can always unbunk the beds - they are just regular beds on top of each other.

Most of the quads in Rocky and Mathey have the beds bunked. The common rooms are typically pretty big, but the bedrooms are usually narrow with the beds bunked, desks, dressers and closets.

When I stayed in Campbell for the Humanities Symposium the beds were bunked and I think each girl got 1 or 2 shelves of a bookcase. I think there were 2 bookcases in the room I was in...

Thanks for the info. Will microfridges and other furniture be readily available after move-in? We have been receiving info about pre- reserving the microfridges, but the website never seems to be working. Also- since there has not yet been a meeting of the four girls, it seems premature to order anything until they all decide what they need. I guess I'm asking if it is OK to not pre-order anything in the way of furniture and rather leave it up to the suitemates to work this all out in the first few days? And how good is the "tent sale" that all the letters have been referencing? Thanks so much for info to calm this worrywort of a parent.

I can't believe that Princeton doesn't furnish common rooms in suites. That is just ridiculous!! Where are the kids supposed to get couches, etc.???

I don't think there's any need to pre-order microfridges, and it is a good idea to wait and have the roommates decide together what they should get. I think the tent sale is mostly student agencies and you can sign up for water delivery, to rent appliances, etc. Probably worthwhile to check out but you can get all those things from the agencies' websites as well.

Thanks boysenberry! Just what I wanted to hear. I was hoping that there will be stuff available shortly after move-in- the letters all give the sense that you must "order now!" or risk lack of availability. But it makes best sense to do this as a group of suitemates or risk 4 microfridges, 4 couches, 9 beanbag chairs, etc.

Also- thanks for the info on bunked beds- I remember 35 years ago having the top bunk (in a triple in Campbell, no less) and my father having to build me a ladder to get up there since I have always been rather athletically challenged. My d, however, assures me she can navigate the hike up, and actually wants a top bunk. Go figure.

I've never heard of them actually running out of microfridge, although they always threaten. The U-store sells futons, which are relatively pricy but pretty good quality. Lots of people get furniture from target/walmart on route 1. I would think about bringing up a chair or two for the common room if you are close by, as it is nice to have some furniture in the common room.

fyi-- campbell hasn't been renovated since you lived in it-- my mom was in campbell as well about 35 years ago, and when I showed her a friends room in it, she said it was exactly the same.

For furniture, I'd recommend the TigerTrade website. The site's been down recently, but you can find decent futons for around $50--much cheaper than buying one from the U-Store.

Good info to know about where to get furniture. I hope the beds have at least been changed out in the past 35 years and perhaps the furniture. As for the rooms- well, you can't beat the old plaster walls and fireplaces. Although I hope the fireplaces have been decommissioned for safety reasons.

We are planning to bring several 3/2 outlet converters since the wiring may not have changed.

I'd bring my own printer, just in case. For furniture, you don't really have to buy it from the U Store, but you can. I think going to Target or Bed, Bath and Beyond is much cheaper, especially if you want a fridge
