Dorm questions

Do people generally follow the 800 watt rule? I know students at colleges where it really doesn't matter if you follow those kinds of rules as long as you don't kill the power, and students at other schools where you will really get in trouble for that kind of thing. My mom was going to insist on getting me a higher wattage because she said an 800 isn't strong enough to pop microwave popcorn and whatnot, but I don't want to get in any trouble and would rather not break any rules if that's something they actually care about.

Secondly, I read in the paperwork for the residence halls that I would have to submit to a safety inspection at the end of every term. Does anybody know what exactly that entails? Do they just check the windows and the outlets, or do they actually do a thorough inspection? None of the colleges I know of do this so I was just curious what to expect from it, like if they are just going to come in and have a quick look around, or if they were actually going to go through my things. I won't have much to hide either way, but I'm just wondering what it'll be like.

1) Generally people do follow the rule, but some do not. Frankly, no one’s going to care if you go over. I would suggest that you don’t get one that’s too powerful, because of short-circuit issues, etc, but in general it really doesn’t matter. Just be careful not to burn anything and cause the fire alarm to go off, because then DPS comes and it just gets really messy.

2) No, they won’t go through your things. They just check the room (windows, locks, etc). Not that big of a deal.
