Dorm Room Cleanliness/Dirt Boys

Hi guys, I'm applying to a few Ivies as well as MIT and have no doubts about the caliber of the education I could potentially be receiving at these institutions. However the photos & videos of the dormitories of these places are pretty limited and I get kinda anxious about the poor cleanliness/living situations I could be facing. Would an RA really intervene if my roommate is a shit boy and wipes his excrement/boogers on the wall? Also, I have a large chair I purchased from Ikea with my Rosh Hashanah money and am wondering if I could remove most existing furniture in my dorm room including my bed, and replace it with the chair in order to go for something a little more bare bones and less occupying as I need a lot of space for my collection of troll dolls and Soulja Boy CDs (I expect to crank it everyday, haters getting mad because I got me some Bathing Apes) Alumni, please respond.

Depends on the RA, but most would only get involved if you cannot work out this issue with the roommate first.

Depends on the college/dorm, but most dormitories and sometimes even furnished college owned apartments tend to strongly frown upon students removing most existing furniture in the room. There are likely policies against such removal with a few possible exceptions. Also be mindful of the fact dorm agreements will hold you responsible for any losses/damage to the existing furniture.

Cranking up your stereo to listen to your CDs or any type of music/sounds is likely to get the RA/higher level residential life authorities on your case if the volume violates dorm policies or after 11-midnight, dorm quiet hours. If you live off-campus and you crank it up, you may be surprised to find some towns/cities actually have earlier quiet hours than some dorms. That was the case with some Columbia U friends when they saw a nearby apartment party shut down by NYPD at a bit past 11 pm because it turns out, 11 pm was* the starting time for evening quiet hours for NYC area residences.

In 2007, NYC amended that to 10 pm.
