A few small questions--
Do dorm rooms have bulletin/memo boards, or can you bring your own? I think we read that you cannot make any sort of holes to hang things.

It looks like floors are linoleum or tile. Do many students bring small rugs?

Tufts' website mentions laptop security devices for $25. Anyone know what these are? Do most students lock up their laptops?

Dorms do not have boards inside of them, most people I know got magnetized ones and put them on their doors.

A lot of people do bring small rugs, bringing large ones can work, but they're a pain to clean.

As for the security device, some people got them, but it appeared as though their parents bought them for them, and honestly, Tufts is quite safe, if you lock your door, I don't see the point of getting one.

You'll mostly stick things onto your walls and door. Don't use tack, it doesn't work too well, especially after some time passes. I got these Scotch squares for hanging up my posters and they work great

Most people have those sticky white boards on their door.

Tile. Rugs are usually a good idea.

Most people don't use laptop locks because Tufts is a pretty safe place. It's tedious to lock and unlock your laptop everytime you move it, and I gave up after a month, but I still think it's better to be safe than sorry.

3M makes hooks and double-sided sticky stuff (I forgot what it is called) but it can hang almost anything and be removed without destroying dorm room walls.

Clean the rug? For our S's first three years at Tufts, we've had an understanding that his inexpensive area rugs (<$20) will have a shelf life of one academic year and are never to reenter our home in May. Same thing goes for mattress covers.

It's true, what Jumbosox says. By the time the weather is good, we're leaving, and when we come back the rain starts hahaha. But most people brought fans (not the window kind, though). And we do have heating, which comes in more handy.

About rugs - people actually bring quite LARGE rugs, lol. Either from the student services rug place, or they went to Target/Jumbo Drop.* It definitely, in my opinion, made a difference to the feel of the dorm room. Much homier. With the linoleum it felt more sterile.

I knew a bunch of people who brought bulletin boards for inside their rooms (in addition to whiteboards on the door, as everyone has said is necessary) and they put them up with those double-sided sticky squares someone above mentioned, the ones that are commonly used to hang up posters.

*Jumbo Drop is this thing where students go around and collect the things that other students left at the end of the year. Sometimes someone will leave a chair, a carpet, a desk, etc, maybe b/c they didn't want to store it or couldn't transport it. During Orientation, all the leftover stuff is set up so that you can come and buy it for cheap.

I used my fan a lot, especially when I first came to Tufts. It can get pretty warm in the early fall and there's no air-conditioning. I need to be cool when I sleep, so I used my fan a lot.
A rug is a nice thing to have. Who wants to walk barefoot on cold tile?
