Dorm room furniture

My son (incoming freshman) will be living in Luter this fall. Does anyone know how hard it is to "debunk" the wooden bunk beds I've seen in picutres for Luter? Do you need any particular tools to do the job? We won't have much time to help him move in and want to be prepared to try to do that as quickly as possible once we arrive.

You don’t need tools to simply debunk the beds – you just lift the top one off. You need an Allen wrench to move the bed itself up higher on the frame, which provides more room for under bed storage. (Can’t tell you which size wrench – we just brought the whole set and one of them fit.)

CBBlinker – Thanks – that’s a help! We bought those bed lift pedestals, so maybe we won’t need the Allen wrench … but I’ll bring some, just to be safe!
I see you’re an empty nester – I’ll be in the same boat when I drop my son off at Wake – not sure how that will be, but I’m sure it will be an adjustment!

I can’t tell you how much difference moving the bed higher on its frame makes. It gives you lots more storage space, and it makes the room look better as well

LN – D put her bed as high as possible on the frame and also used the bed risers. This enabled her to fit a stack of plastic drawers under her bed, which added a considerable amount of storage.

The whole empty nest thing is definitely an adjustment – not necessarily bad, just different. Since S is our youngest, it made the biggest difference cooking-wise when he left. (He’s headed into his sophomore year.) Also, I’m not doing laundry as much, I don’t have to hound anyone to get out the door to school, etc., etc. Just when H & I seem to have adjusted to our new “state,” a vacation rolls around and things get hectic again!

ginnyvere and CBBBlinker – sounds like an Allen wrench will make the trip with us from Florida to Winston-Salem! From the picture on the Housing link off the New Student page (which seems to be a picture of a Luter room), it looks like it’s a tight fit to get the 2 beds debunked in Luter rooms. When you debunk … the top bunk (with the lower headboard and footboard) seems to just fit next to the desk area, so I’m wondering if the lower bunk (with the higher headboard and footboard) would also fit next to the desk area and still allow you to raise the bed on the frame.
It would seem that the bottom bunk would be the better bed (if you can get it) because it gives you the higher footboard to hang stuff (like backpacks) on. Also – Luter kids seem to get cheated out of desk space – other freshman dorms have traditional desks with drawers and shelf/hutch above it. Where do kids in Luter put their school stuff like text books, paper, etc. They have no real desk storage other than a single drawer it seems!
