i’ve visited campus a few times, but i didn’t really get to see the dorms in the quad (i stayed in a senior’s single during open house). i had a few questions about them…

a) how do the triples work? are there a lot of them, and are they two seperate rooms or just one big room, or a bunk bed or something? because my friend and i requested to room together and i read somewhere that if you do that barnard tends to put you in a quad or a triple so you can meet new people… is that true?

b) what are the walls made of - can you hang things or just use tape?

c) do they have any kitchen appliances in the lounges or anywhere in the quad, or is it a good idea to get a microwave etc etc

a. Triples are located in Sulzberger. I've never seen them myself, but I don't think there are many of them. The only other form of a triple is in Brooks, and it's a weird formation with 1 room for desks and the other room for all 3 beds.

If you requested to room with someone you know, you could be put in a Brooks Quad Suite. I was in a quad suite, and my suitemates knew each other from home and requested to live together. The quad suite is 2 doubles with a room in between for all 4 desks. It's a bit of a tight squeeze.

b. You're technically not supposed to hang things, but it's possible. I'd recommend the Command hooks. You can get them at the University Housewares store on Broadway. They're the hooks that have the adhesive on the back - and are easy to remove come move out day.

c. The lounges have an oven and microwave. No need for one of your own, and I don't think they're allowed anyways.

about hanging things on the walls, they don't actually care as long as the walls look ok when you leave. mine were covered in tack holes, old scotch tape, and water stains when i got there..
you may want to bring a coffeepot and a fridge because those things aren't in the lounge. but there will be a microwave, oven, stovetop, tv.

D is from California, but her roommate is from New York. Roommate brought a small fridge. You'll find out soon who your roommate is, and then workout who is bringing what. Agree that a microwave is unnecessary and occupies space that could be better used.

And note: If you want to bring a coffeepot, you have to bring the kind that does NOT have a "hot plate". Rather, get the kind that dispenses the hot liquid directly into the sealed thermos-type cup or caraffe (depending on the size coffee maker you bring).

As I recall, the reslife site has a very extsensive list of what is and is not allowed, BTW. That is how we found out about the coffee pot!

Another thing she brought that you might want to consider is a water-filter/pitcher thingey (Barnard has OLD buildings with OLD pipes, so we just thought it might be a good idea...). And the fridge is EASY to rent once you get there...

i was wondering if theres cable to have a tv? i haven't heard of anything about it ... i'm living in sulzberger next year and i was just wondering.

Just a note on the triples in Sulz... There are three triples on each floor of Sulz and only one is reasonably big enough for 3 people. The other two are "cozy". (I was in a triple my first year in Sulz.)

barnard doesn't provide cable but during orientation week there's a cable company on campus and you can buy it and they'll set it up for you. i don't know if the tvs in the lounges have cable, i think they might.
