Any general dorm room questions?

Angelbigbird-
If you’re giving advice, tell me about freshman closet and drawer space and floor space for stacking bins, etc. I noticed that most of the SU rooms I saw in Day did not have beds up on risers for underbed storage, etc. Tell me what the best storage options are in a standard AND split double. I do not know what dorm my daughter is in but I imagine most of the rooms have similar orientations.

Actually, not really. It depends on where you are living. i went to target and bed and bath beyond and their storage systems were pretty good. I had a friend who lived in Flint (which is similar to Day) and these are some of the storage systems she had…

stuff like that. there isnt too much closet space in Day

However, I did have a split double in Brewster Hall and it was amazing! Great closet space some people said it was small but I enjoyed it completely. I pretty much bought the same as the stuff above.

Here are some other storage things to look out for:

You dont think about stuff like this but your daughter definitely should buy these…

everyone~hi~
Do you bring these stuffs to the dorm when you first arrive???
Or after you arrive, then you order them to the dorm???
Because I do not want to carry such things to the dorm at first time…
any other things that a new comer should bring???
thx!!!

Well some people do and some people don’t. For example my friend had the items she wanted sent to the syracuse branch so she could pick it up there, there definitely is a wal-mart and a target on erie blvd which is a a mile or two away from campus.

I personally brought my most of things on campus during moving day because i couldnt bring a car. (freshman arent allowed to have cars on campus and my mother had to lead that same day actually about 4 hours later… so i chose that method.)

besides… dont worry about carrying in things in freshman year beacsue there is the goon squad who will help you carry your stuff inside!

here’s a good place to start, it helped me when i wanted to pack for school.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-life/82285-z-what-bring-college.html

from a current junior…pm/reply with any other questions…i don’t check too often so PM is probably better.

for those unfamiliar, goon squad is a crew of upperclassmen who will help you and your family move in all your stuff…we have giant bins and carts to help move stuff in, but this means that you go at the pace of the line…so be prepared to wait, particularly if you’re living in BBB or Flint/Day (lots of freshmen moving in in just 2 days’ span!).

far and away my best purchase (i lived in dorms fresh and soph years–open doubles so minimal space) was a storage ottoman…you can get them from bed bath and beyond or target…it’s a stool (yay extra seating) that is hollow inside…usually 15-20 bucks but it’s quite worth it.

you can request that your bed be lofted or you can bring your own risers; they have different leg lengths that you can request but FixIt (the handyman crew) is booked solid the first two weeks, so don’t depend on it right away. SU doesn’t allow bunking. as an fyi the beds are metal frames “hospital style” so be careful of which risers you get; the poles are only about 1-inch square (cross-section).

biggest space-saver–contact your future roommate before making any big purchases! I know it gets exciting to buy new things but you really don’t want to end up with two televisions and drying racks (and as for the drying rack, I’ve never owned one!) taking up space.

whats the highest they will make the beds? And can I put in a request now?

i suggest informing your roommate if you still wet the bed (especially when youre drunk)

well from what i know, the beds are usually really high to begin with, especially in BBB. but yeah, i think its too early to contact FIXit (they are the people whom you can contact in regards to raising your bed. Maybe you should contact them at the end July
