My son is going to be in a triple in Friley hall. We are flying in so I am trying to be as organized as I can be with shipping things in advance and coming a day early so we can shop ect. He and his roommates have talked and they are all lofting their beds and we have ordered one mini fridge. I'm just wondering how much room will be left in the room? Can I buy him a small comfy chair that folds for storage to put under his bed? A throw rug? Do they typically put their desks under their beds? Other then the standard items I see on the list any suggestions? Thanks for any help. Also I think there is a target and a walmart close by? But not a bed bath and beyond. Are there any other stores that would be helpful?? Trying to make this a smooth as possible.

I am not familiar with the Friley triples, but lots of students cram desks and chairs/sofa under their lofts. I am always shocked at the amount of furniture these students can cram into each room. I see the furniture junk pile outside of the res halls each year at U Iowa where I work, pretty shocking:)

We bought 2 bean bag chairs and throw rugs for son last year at the Ames Target.

Ames has a Walmart, Target, Lowes, and Sams Club. They also have a Kohls and TJ Maxx. We dropped off son last year on Tuesday, the Ames Target was already picked clean for some things.

If you are flying into Des Moines, you will drive through Ankeny on the way to Ames. Ankeny is about 20 minutes from Ames and they have a Target, Walmart, Menards (home improvement)…all right off of I35 at the same exit. You might consider stopping there on your way to Ames.

Thanks haystack. Your always so helpful. My son is so excited!! I really feel like he made a good decision.

My daughter was in a double in Friley last year so I’ve recently seen the triples (they’re typically corner units). Essentially, there’s floor space in Friley rooms for beds and desks. Lofting beds just increases floor space, so lofting three would be huge. Any chair you buy would not need to, as you say, “fold for storage”. My daughter and her roommate ended up with two chairs, a small lamp table, a dresser, and TV stand under their lofts. So lofting three beds? Honestly, they can probably be thinking futon plus a chair or two, entertainment center and a dresser or two.

Side note: Friley is an old dorm, so definitely not the modern, spacious dorm rooms one might see. The dresser was in the room but, short of lofting beds, would have had to go in someone’s closet. Also, Friley has been added on over the years so different parts of the dorm have slightly different room sizes, with more/less space, so take everything I’ve said as a general guideline only.
