Hi, I’ve committed to RIT for the fall. I haven’t found much information on residence halls at RIT. I visited and I know what they look like in general but I was wondering what the “best” residence hall is? Thanks!
Hi @Lindsayyyyyyy Everyone probably has different ideas of the ‘best’ dorm. Just a few have AC, some are smaller and quieter and of course in the big dorm towers you’re likely to always find something going on. Did you apply to any of the special interest floors?
If you haven’t looked at the dorm by dorm info on this page yet http://www.rit.edu/fa/housing/content/locations it may help. Also, did you join the student facebook group? My D met her roommate that way, and they chose a dorm room together.
For what it’s worth, my D is on the 7th floor of Sol Heumann hall. Big as it is, she hasn’t had any trouble with waiting for a bathroom or noisy floormates. She’s made some good friends from the floor, and others from her or her roommate’s classes.
Good luck!
Hi @Lindsayyyyyyy - the one big difference we could find for the dorms is that some are shaped more like a rectangle (2 windows) and others are shaped more like a square (one window). The “square” has slightly more square feet according to the tour guide, but I thought the natural light was better in the rectangle. Also, only some of the dorms have elevators. While that might not be important on a daily basis, it might be for when you need to do laundry. RIT has a long winter - you will get more natural light if you are higher up.
Those are all good points @MazeArtCrew. Even on the higher floors, the rooms tend to be dark, so bring along a desk lamp and a small clip on lamp if you may be reading or doing homework in bed. The downside to a higher floor is during a fire drill, when you must go down the stairs - no elevators. I believe you can use the elevators to go back up once the drill is over, but they probably get crowded.
Laundry - my D decided a backpack-type hamper would be a good idea. Her dorm does have elevators, but it’s still a hike to the elevator, then once on the lower level another hike over to the laundry room.
Note to both of you, on freshman move-in day the elevators can only be used to go UP. Wear really comfy or sturdy shoes because you may have several trips up and down.
Thanks, @12dandelion! I will show my D your suggestions.
@MazeArtCrew have you joined the parents facebook group page yet? I think it’s called incoming class of 2015. Lots of info there too.
@12dandelion I’ll look into it, thanks!
@MazeArtCrew and @12dandelion, thanks for your help! I have looked on the RIT page for information but it’s really hard to chose a dorm when you havent seen it. I would make another trip but I kind of live 1000 miles away. Ahah. I guess I’ll just have to base my decision on the page unless I find a roommate who knows what they want. I’ve been on the Facebook page since January but still no roommate. Hopefully soon!
