My son’s date/time for his housing selection is next Tuesday at 9am. Because he will be taking a final at that time, I offered to select for him. My question, when I log in and select his preferred dorm, will I be able to select the actual room? And if so, is there a floor plan layout showing location of bathrooms and stairwells? Thanks.
Yes and Yes. You will see the floor plan, and which rooms are “available”.
Are the floor plans available before the selection process?
My child did not have the choice of an exact room when choosing last year, only dorm and room type (single, double, triple).
@Mobie101 - when selecting last year, did you choose early or later in the overall selection process? Someone else told me you were not only able to choose the room, but also the bed in the room.
This was Spring 2014, and through the online method. We could only see the floorplans when the system allowed us to log in. Then she could select her room, and then she “pulled” in her roommate. You couldn’t select beds, but this was for Jennings, so the suite style rooms may be different. I really couldn’t find any floorplans online, before room selection day.
Is there a way to find out if there is still space in a particular dorm prior to your selection date?
And is hume ONLY for students in honors program? THANKS!
Does everyone have a different date for room selection? I thought they were all on the same day, just different times.
My child is on May 21, is that late and will we have fewer selections?
@ufmomfriend yes Hume is only honors
@Gatormom22 - Summer B is May 10th, while Fall is May 21st.
@ufmomfriend Honor students get first shot at Hume, but in the past, some rooms have been available (since it’s a bit pricey, and some honor students choose other dorms or even off-campus housing).
Oh, they also don’t make all rooms available, at the same time. They will open up rooms, as they move through the waves of students. So, in theory, as long as you made the due data for your $25 deposit, you may have a chance at any dorm, but it’s still best to pick early.
(this was 2014, assuming it still works this way).
Dr. Law director of Honors, announced a record high number of Honors students who are indicating Hume as a choice and there would be very little likelihood for an Honors student to pull in a non honors student into Hume. They have sent my daughter at least 7 emails asking her if she is sure she wants to stay in Hume! 790+ students are coming into Honors.
From Dr. Law: " Parents of the Class of 2020 - We had 792 out of 1240 accepted students confirm participation in the program. We were aiming for 650 to 700, so wow.
What that means is that Hume will be in high demand. There is no chance a non-Honors roommate will find a spot. So students will need to choose between Hume and the roommate."
They are also working on a possibility of having a second Honors dorm area close to Hume and all the planned activities.
@ProudParent2010, my son chose early in the process. I think he had the second time slot on the first day of selection. Did the email you received with your time slot mention that you could select the actual room? If I am remembering correctly, last year it was called “building selection” or something like that, and only the building and room type were selected. Then, at room assignment time (several weeks after building selection), students were assigned to specific rooms, and those who did not already have a roommate finally learned who they were rooming with. This process could have changed this year, though! The whole process is very nerve-wracking!
After freshman year, your child should be able to select the exact room, though. At least that’s how it happened this year–returning students could choose their exact room. But unless my memory is tricking me, last year freshman could only pick building and room type, and UF assigned the room number.
When my son chose his room last May he was only able to select a room type and building. He was notified in July of his exact room. When he selected his room for next year (back in February) he was able to select exact room. I’m not sure if freshman can only choose building and room type, or if something has changed since last May.
@Mobie101 and @Minnie17- Did your son/daughter have their roommate prior to the building selection process, or did they have a random roommate? Did that play a role in the room selection? My son is going with a random roommate thing. He was hoping to get close to the stairwell and away from the bathroom/break room, with a preference on the second floor. I am guessing this would not be an option if its truly a “building selection” process for their freshman year.
My son ended up getting a single room in Jennings (off the wait list). Had he not been in a single he would have been assigned a random roommate. He was originally supposed to be in a double in Simpson.
The parents of 2019 have a Facebook group that has 2 UF staff as members that answer questions. One is from housing. It has been a wonderful resource. I think the new group is called UF Families of 2020.
@ProudParent2020, my son did not have a roommate prior to building selection.
Any thoughts on Keys Complex?
Full?
Good for freshman?
