Dorm Selection

Hi guys,

Has everyone already decided on which hall they would like to stay in?

I'm still debating between Stark Hall and Phillips/Berger. Since I'm not a smoker/drinker, my parents are recommending Stark(substance-free). However, I've heard that the Stark Hall has a quiet and reserved atmosphere. I'm thinking of Phillips/ Berger as they are freshmen-dominated halls, recently renovated and have more of a tight-knit community.

Does anyone have anymore information/suggestions about CMC dorms?

They’re all pretty gross so it doesn’t matter much. I guess I would suggest a substance-free dorm (I didn’t know they had those) if you don’t want beer pong around you all the time.

I just visited CMC, and I would suggest the mid quad dorms. I guess I like the in between-ness of them.

The housing form was already due so this post is going to be useless for the OP, but I just want to address some of these comments.

Where on earth did you get the idea of them being gross? During my overnight, I actually noticed how well-kept the renovated dorms looked. They also provide a weekly cleaning service to make sure that everything is kept looking presentable and tidy.

As for beer pong, it’s generally played around mid quad and some lounges in south quad. It’s easily avoidable if seeing it makes you feel… erm… uncomfortable? :-/

@Woandering‌,

Mid quad is where you go if you don’t mind being around the party scene all the time. It’s fine if you’re already used to CMC and won’t mind that sort of environment as an upperclassmen, but I definitely wouldn’t recommend it as an incoming freshman.

Phillips/Berger aren’t so bad since the renovation, actually. They’re a lot cleaner than they used to be! I lived in Phillips my freshman year and it was just fine, especially the girls’ floor. The cleaning staff clean all of the lounges and bathrooms daily in Mid and South Quad, so the only time things can get really nasty are over the weekend. The place I really wouldn’t want to live in is Marks.

Mid Quad is traditionally where the vast majority of incoming freshmen live, so I would have to respectfully disagree with Carotid. (: It’s actually nice how easy it is to meet people in those dorms - people leave their doors open a lot. Upperclassmen really only live in Crown Hall, and then the singles in the other Mid Quad dorms. Doubles are almost all freshmen.

North Quad is where the party’s at, and beware of weekly Tuesday night beer pong in Appleby…it gets LOUD.

I never actually lived in South Quad so can’t really comment, but it’s extremely quiet compared to the rest of campus. Especially Stark.

@anonymityyy‌

Whoops! I mixed up north and mid.

Yeah, north is where I wouldn’t recommend living until you’re already comfortable with the social scene.

Hi Anonymityyy-- Is there a reason you would not recommend Marks? I am a freshman looking for a place where I can meet people but I also need my sleep and don’t want constant noise. I know North Quad is out and I am not interested in Stark. Any thoughts? Thanks!

@baffled5300‌ - To be honest, it’s just a personal bias - I think Marks looks like a prison! It’s also the last dorm (along with Benson) that should logically be renovated, but hasn’t been yet. It also usually has a lot of upperclassmen because one side of the building is 100% singles. However, there’s nothing WRONG with it. It can get loud occasionally like all the other dorms, but there’s definitely not constant noise in any of the Mid or South Quad dorms. If you’re really concerned about getting your sleep, you might try to get in Auen or Fawcett.
