I'm well versed in the actual Hall system, what with the sorting of students into a dorm and their staying there pretty much for their 4 years, and whatnot.

But what about the actual layout of the dorms? Are they spacious? Are there common rooms, lounges, study centers, etc etc?

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated

P.S. No matter what you say, I'm going to Notre Dame if I get in, it's just that I'm very curious about the dorm layouts and can't seem to find any information on them. Thanks in advance.

Depends from dorm to dorm but the rooms are a bit smaller than average by and large. Next year we will finally get cable in the rooms so that will be fantastic! There are study lounges but a lot of them get converted into rooms because they always overcrowd the dorms (ugh). There are TV lounges, and those are nice (they had to be, they were the only place we had cable) and also because of that we have nice big screen TV's in every dorm. I hope that helps some along with the link from the last poster.

Also, can you guys tell me which are the oldest of the dorms? One of the appeals of ND for me is the history, and I would love to stay in an old, tradition-filled dorm.

Old College = 1834 (undergraduate vocation program, not to be confirmed with the Moreau Seminary)
Sorin = 1888
Carroll = 1906
Morrissey = 1925
St. Ed's = 1929

Alumni/Dillon = 1931

I guess the assumption has been made that the OP is male?

Nemo, do you just know everything about Notre Dame?

Thanks a ton. I'd ask you all which dorm you thought was the best, but I'm pretty sure I would get a different response from each of you, considering the dorm loyalty that develops. I guess I'll just have to cross my fingers that I get sorted into a good one (or even get accepted).

lol, you are right Nemo, I did assume that because of their user name. Well, if you are female kevdude (kind of doubt) let us know and we will go get a new list (I will actually look it up this time too instead of being in a rush and guessing)

Eh, I live in South Bend, and my dad's a prof at notre dame (i got accepted early action). So if you have any questions, I can see what I can do.

Zahm's a popular dorm, lots of parties, but it's only popular for its members (the rest of the dorms love to hate them). Stanford dorm was built as a bomb shelter...horrible...

The new ones are much larger/air-conditioned rooms, the male dorms are "Keough" and "O'Neill", and the females are "Welsh Family" and "McGlinn". You can switch dorms if you want, but it's unconventional, like it's been said, the dorm pride keeps kids sticking around unless you really wanna get out. (Brady Quinn is in dillon, he gets a quad to himself...) (Most of the higher profile athletes are in the newer dorms). Keenan's popular, simply because of people wanting to do the Keenan Revue, comedy show, so if that's your thing, Keenan's great for you. Anything else, let me know

Which of the girls' dorms are nicest? I stayed in Farley last weekend, and it was pretty cool, but the triple I stayed in was the size of a double.

haha, i'm a guy, so i can only give you minimal help there...like i said, welsh family and mcglinn are the two "new" female dorms, air-conditioned, bigger rooms, singles available (for upperclassmen, really). Beyond that, I'm not overly-familiar with their dorms (female dorms, that is). I know the pasquerillas (east and west) are popular, along with Cavanaugh (which keeps winning the best dorm contests), and that my multiple friends in howard hall are all obsessed (that's one of the OLD ones) but beyond that, I'm afraid advice prolly must come from elsewhere. Perhaps nemo has researched it? :-)

besides, you don't really get a say in the dorm selection, so it's prolly easier to just relax...(lyons is a beautiful building, but an old one, forgot about that one)

For every dorm there seems to pretty much be a guy's and girl's version. I have lived in O'Neill, which is one of the very newest dorms, and I now live in Fisher which is an older dorm. Having been in both, the newer ones have nicer rooms and air conditioning so Welsh Fam, McGlinn, PW, PE are all going to fit that bill. That being said, I don't think those things are important. The most important thing to me is being in a dorm with good people where I really fit and I have a good relationship with my rector and what not. When I had roommate problems I had a lot of problems with my rector in O'Neill which in part led to my switch to Fisher. I love Fisher, I really couldn't be happier, even though it is older, has smaller rooms, and doesn't have air conditioning. All of these dorms are what you make of them, and if you make them fun, they will be fun. Zahm is notorious because they make it that way but they also have a great brotherhood because of it. Just see where you end up but don't judge your dorm before going there because so much of what will make you happy is the atmosphere. If you look at the stats and the pictures you would say that O'Neill is much much better than Fisher but I am much happier in Fisher (not just because of the roommate, I also had a good roommate in O'Neill, long story). You just have to find where you fit!

My son lives in Sorin and loves it. Though I have to say I was a little suprised when I saw the size of his room - it's really small! But he's really happy there, so that's what counts.

Hey, I hear that there are Gyms in the dorm which is really awesome. By the way, is everyone living in a double freshman-senior year with a roomate? And are you guys satisfied with your room size?

depending on your dorm/assignment, you could be in a double, triple, or quad freshman year, and after that there's great variance. My friend has a single in McGlinn, but she's a senior, so that was more easily managed. Another friend lived in one room with 6 people total his sophomore year in Zahm (bedrooms branchign from a common room). There's no one set format for all the rooms.

Siegfried is my dorm.. and it's awesome! We have really big rooms and big closets (originally a girls dorm). I love our dorm and our spirit and unity. but I have to admit that some of the older ones (with smaller rooms) i.e. Dillon/Alumni/Morrisey/Sorin have some really cool looks to them along with some awesome history. But no matter where you'r'e placed you will definitely love your dorm (except for possibly Carol.. haha.. they're so far from everything). But regarding Zahm.. they are definitely the least popular with other dorms but most of them love it there. If you're a Rambler next year I should be one of the ones helping out with Freshman Orientation! Best of luck.
