What is the dorm situation like at UVA? How many people per dorm room usually?

In most cases, 2 for first-year students. There are some singles, but some of them are in less popular buildings.

About half of the residence halls for first-year students have been newly constructed in the past 5 years.

Plans are being prepared to fully renovate the McCormick Road dorms and to add air conditioning. However, I don’t know if they will be done by the next entering class.

Most first years have 1 roommate (2 per room). You could have between 12-30 sharing the bathroom though (30 people would be for hall-style so the bathroom is bigger than 12 people for suite style).
Some first years live in singles and share a bathroom.
Some first years get put in triples but as rooms open up they are given the option to move to a double instead.

The older dorms are… older. No a/c. The newer dorms I hear are amazing. They are constructing them right now, so some buildings are only 1 year old. The “old dorms” on McCormick are from the 1950s.

Let us know if you have any more specific questions you think of.

Are single bedrooms given to students based on academic strength?

^^Single room : I dont think so. It has nothing to do with grades or academic.
My D2 is in a single room, she likes it. Me too.
( 6 single rooms, share one large bathroom, one living room)
The brand new dorms are like hotels, they look amazing !

My D1 lived in the old dorms a few years ago & there are some single room in the old dorm. Those single rooms are near the staircase & by the hallway.

The single rooms are assigned randomly.

There are some singles in McCormick… One of my friends lived in one. They are 1/3 the size of a McCormick room, plus the ceiling is slanted because they are under the stairs. Can’t believe they let students live in those closets. They are cheaper though. Same friend also lived in Gooch singles, which are small but wayyy bigger than the McCormick ones. I like the all-around-the-room shelving near the ceiling in the Gooch ones. Hereford has singles also.

What dorm was your D in? Mine has both allergies and migraines. Definitely needs a single with AC and no mold! Tx
D1 was in a double in old dorms (McCormick). Close to everything but old. Laundry in another building and really no common rooms to speak of. I don’t think she could specify location between old and new.
The first year housing website describes every option and there are pictures of real rooms in each building. It’s a great resource. http://www.virginia.edu/housing/fy.php
I’m not in housing, but word around Grounds is that AC is being added to the buildings without it over the summer. Verify that with housing, of course.
