I'm going to apply to IU as early as possible so I can get that done and not have to worry about college much during senior year. Therefore, I'm going ahead and looking at the campus map and thinking about dorms.
Are any dorms much bigger or much smaller than the others? (ie Do 60% of the people in the neighborhood live in the same one dorm? Are your chances of one dorm really small?)
Are there any dorms that freshmen do not get into? (ie In dorms open to undergrads, are any so popular that the rooms get snatched up by upper classmen?)
Does IU try to match you with a roommate you might be compatable with? (Some schools have a questionare about your habits.)
If I apply early, will I, as a freshman, be likely to get a single room if I request one?

I'd appreciate any info you can give me. I'm sold on IU and I know my major, I just am pretty clueless as to what to say I want and what I'm likely to get dorm-wise.

Oh. One last random question: Can anybody tell me how big the Art History program is? Just curious.

No, as a freshman you have three choices: Northwest, Central, and Southeast. If you apply early enough you will almost certainly get a dorm in the neighborhood you choose.

There is no such thing at IU.

-Yes, I don’t think there are single rooms available to freshman though in Northwest. I know there are in Central.

There are a lot of threads on here that discuss the merits of the different neighborhoods. You should definitely read those and decide which one fits you the best.

Most dorms seem to be about the same size, with the exception of Eigenmann which by far has the biggest rooms out of the dorms that first year students live in. I believe Wright has the smallest rooms. Otherwise, they’re pretty much the same.

Dorms are pretty much dominated by freshmen and some sophomores. Upperclassmen generally live in on/off campus apartments/houses or in Greek housing.

No questionnaire, but you are allowed to choose who you room with if you wish to room with a friend or someone you meet online. (i.e. Facebook groups, ■■■■■■■■)

Not exactly sure how this works. If I do recall correctly, you can’t choose what type of room you live in as a freshman. Singles are pretty popular with returning students, and they choose their housing before incoming freshmen do. I know that Ashton, which is an all-singles dorm, has a residence scholars community which you can apply to if you meet the criteria.
