Class of ‘92 lived in Dabney (Old dorms rule!) first year but that’s now over 25 years ago -gasp!
Current thinking about dorms would be appreciated for accepted daughter…
I was in Bonnycastle Class of 90. The old dorms have had a major upgrade since we were there. Not as fancy but so much closer!!!
D lives in Watson Webb. Nice facilities but not very social. She’s a varsity athlete so she has other social outlets. Alderman road dorms have AC and are convenient to E-school.
D lives in Gibbons. Really nice, clean, new, across the street from the gym. I’m not sure you have any choice though.
Unless they have changed things from a few years ago students do not choose a dorm. They can choose a roomate. If they have documented health issues/letter from a physician saying they need AC that will get them into dorm with AC.
Yeah I don’t think you really get to choose your dorm; I was randomly assigned to new dorms.
As other posters mentioned, you don’t get to choose your dorm unless you have specific accommodations.
That being said, right now, I think the “new” Old Dorms are the most sought after. They are renovating the Old Dorms 3-4 at a time, and the renovations are gorgeous! By next year, the following Old Dorms will be renovated: Bonnycastle, Echols-Humphreys, Page-Emmett, and Kent-Dabney. These 7 would probably be considered the best because of their prime location, AC & renovations, and the historic charm of the Old Dorm style.
However, you really can’t go too wrong with any of the dorms at UVA. Best of luck!
We had no A/C in Dabney…only fans in the windows. Kids today don’t know how good they’ve got it!
Thanks for the info.
I loved the proximity to things there but assumed they were still antiquated…
I honestly wanted old dorms over new dorms, and while I was very happy with living in a new dorm, I definitely think the community environment is stronger in old dorms (according to people I know who lived there). The renovated old dorms are probably the best right now in my opinion.
