For a freshman girl majoring in Engineering...I'm leaning toward a female only dorm...instead of COED. Any suggestions?

The commons, where I live just recently changed all dorms to co-ed. If you want all girls, your choices are probably going to be limited.

I heard Rudder is a good dorm...yes?

any thoughts about the honors dorms ????? at UT they are apparently nicer, but how are they at Texas A&M ?

I stayed in Lechner (the freshman honors dorm) for a program this summer and was really impressed--I'm definately gonna try to get into it.

i hear spence is a pretty good female only dorm...im in all male myself...on northside...but if u want unity with your dormmates...live on northside in the fhk or neely...if you want to join sorority...or just keep to your self...live southside...

Northside does have better community, but southside dorms have non communal bathrooms, and southside kids have higher average GPAs. Im just not keen on the idea of a community bathroom, so I had to go southside.

Starting next year Moses Hall on Northside will be a freshman only co-ed hall.

Rudder is good... I have a friend who is a Resident Advisor there this year. The rooms are really big, because it is a modular. It's also close to the commons (and the new Tomato Bar dining facility- which is ridiculously yummy). Of course I would root for Lechner if that is an option, though. I am an advisor there, so I'm a little biased. :-) The social aspect is really fun and supportive, and it's like you have a family the moment you move in.

which dorms have a better social life ?

I'll be in Lechner as a freshman next fall, so it's good to hear somebody liked it. Anybody know any more about it?

Lechner is an honors dorm. Fair or not, it gets typecasted as being boring and non sociable compared to the "party" dorms.

Umm... that's perfect, actually. (I'm conservative, Christian, premed on top of that, so partying's kinda not my thing...) :-) Thanks for the info!

Lechner is amazing. Studious, yes, but also frequently #1 in intermurals, way involved in almost every kind of club, and with lots of dorm activities. I'm not really sure who would call it boring or non sociable... last year it was dorm of the year (rated on events and hall activities). It just has a different, more intellectual maybe?, quality to it. Less alcohol, I guess.

and btw, of the top of my head I can think of 9 Northside dorms without communal bathrooms ;-)

Spence/Briggs, in south side, are all female dorms although they have tiny rooms and communal bathrooms.

So for a male chemical engineering major is southside close to all of the main building for an engineering major.

PremedPenguin, a guy I know lived in Lechner for 2 years. A girl who lived in a nearby dorm (I don't remember the name of it) told me that Lechner was very different from her dorm. She said that in Lechner, people left their doors open a lot and there were always people in the lobby playing games and hanging out. In the girl's dorm, you barely knew your next-door neighbors.

Also, as a Christian, I hope you will be able to attend Impact ( http://impact.tamu.edu/retreat.php ). It's an awesome opportunity to prepare yourself spiritually for college and to make some like-minded friends.

I was told that Lechner was a Freshman dorm only. Is that incorrect?

Does anyone have any updated opinions on the dorms for a male engineering student? Any opinions on the engineering students' dorm? Thanks!
