dorm

which resident hall should i pick?

p.s. i heard cmu's food is pretty bad. is that true?

i'm going through the same dilemma. i've heard that most freshmen live in either New House or Morewood E Tower, and each dormitory has it's own pros and cons. ironically, new house is newer, but it's also smaller. morewood is more spacious and has laundry rooms on each floor. i guess it's all just a personal preference. you can check online at www.housing.cmu.edu for more info on each dorm.. that would probably help a lot more.

but i also would like more information about the dorms, maybe from a current student?

thanx! what r u majoring in?
my cousins friend whos a sophomore in cmu said i should put new house, morewood, mudge. (in that order)

I lived in Morewood E-Tower this past semester. I recommend it without hesitation. You really get to bond with everyone on your floor, and the Underground (the dining facilty located at the entrance to Morewood) is conveniently close. The only advantage New House has in my opinion is that it has air conditioning where E-Tower doesn't. However, this isn't a problem if you bring a fan (or if necessary housing will provide you with an AC). The lounge on my floor is a very enjoyable place, and it is frequently a place to gather. I have forged many friendships on my floor, and I believe the "coziness" of the floor(s) encourages this. E-Tower is an excellent choice.

how hot does it get in the summer?

70s-low 80s (sometimes) and rather humid. But you don't really spend that much time in your room. You're usually out and about, or in an AC area, like the UC. It cools down after the first few weeks.

Another thing to consider is I believe that New House is more expensive than Morewood, since they do get AC. I'd second the New/MW/Mudge list, though not neccesarily in that order. I'd go for Morewood, Mudge, New, but it's a personal preference. You'll get info when you need to decide.

"70s-low 80s"

What's that in celsius?

morewood A-D tower is good. you get to meet upperclassmen and not play games all day

about 21-27 celsius

You won't be there in the hottest part of summer - dont worry about it. You are out by 2nd week in May - may get some days in mid-high 70s...when you come back in late August, you will have 70-80 degrees for a short time, but night temps will drop quickly - very comfortable.

"about 21-27 celsius"

That's considered hot is it?

For freshmen, I recommend Morewood E Tower without hesitation. The heat is not a problem. The rooms are among the biggest on campus. It is extremely well located (the University Center is 2 minutes' walk away, and most of the academic buildings are no more than 6 minutes away). There's a dining location in the basement, which is convenient when you're pressed for time or it's cold outside and you don't want to get bundled up. Since the building is freshmen-only, there's a definite sense of community, like some people here have said. Overall it's a very nice place to live.

ilovekitties: the food here does suck. Can't deny that. There are some decent off-campus eating options, though, especially in Squirrel Hill.
