dorm?

Hey guys. I'm gonna be in UCLA next year and I was wondering which residence hall is best. I heard great things about Dykstra but I checked the site and it said it doesn't have a lounge or a tv room. Are these nice to have? And is there alot of freshmen in Dykstra? Thanks.

I'm wondering the same thing -- what's the down low on the different res halls?

-Ender

you won't care about not having a TV room in dykstra - if its really that big a deal to you to be able to watch a big screen TV sometimes, you can go downstairs to the one in the De Neve study room or go mooch off of Sproul's :p

Honestly, what matters most is the people on your floor - that is the biggest factor in your dorm atmosphere. Other than that, the only difference is how far you have to walk to get there, which can be a big or small thing depending on the person haha.

is there a certain dorm that has a "party" reputation?

lounges are good for studying and group studying. they're not as useful for social purposes. there's a big screen tv on one of the rieber floors (due to construction compensation), but no one ever uses it. there's a big screen tv and a tv room on the sproul lobby, but its usually empty too. i like having a lounge though, its a good place to study really and host study groups.

i dont know if dykstra has a lounge or not, but if they don't, it would be reasonable, since dykstra is considered the MOST social dorm of ALL the dorms at UCLA. dykstra will be approximately 50% returners and 50% freshmen next year, or at least that's what is allocated for it by ORL (office of residential life).

as for best dorm, that's really up to you. how do you imagine your living environment to be? some love de neve for being quite, others hate it for its lack of socialness. so what's important to you?

wait wait wait, sooo kfc4u, can u help list ALL the dorm names and pros/cons they have? much thanks in advance.

oh btw im looking for like a dorm with social atmosphere but not to the point that the whole house is rockin', if u catch my drift.

I am 95% sure I am going to UCLA as a freshie next fall and I'm wondering what dorm would be the best for me. I am very social, but at the same time, I go to sleep really early so I would like it quiet then. Dorms with good food are a plus too. Do any of the dorms have a good balance in terms of social, yet quieter at night?

Also, are all the residence hall rooms the same size? Is there a particular residence hall with slightly larger rooms?

I am in honors, so I can have any dorm that I want. I know that the plazas have bigger rooms, but I'm leaning toward doing to res. halls so I can get ot know people easier. So what are the pros and cons of the plazas besides them not being very social? Thanks a million guys!!

I am in honors, so I can have any dorm that I want.

well I'm not sure what gave you that idea, but it isn't true. Especially as a freshman, you get whatever they assign you.

Yes, all the res hall rooms are the same size (Dykstra rooms are slightly shorter, but the same width). You can eat at any dining hall you want, so food shouldn't be a factor. The rooms in the plaza buildings aren't really bigger than the res hall rooms.

okay. so freshmen basically get no preference (not even honors or regeants)?

im looking at the campus map and is this an updated map??
<a href="http://www.housing.ucla.edu/housing_site/oncampus/map.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.housing.ucla.edu/housing_site/oncampus/map.htm</a></p>

so the residential halls are...
Hedrick Hall
Rieber Hall
Sproul Hall
Dykstra Hall

Can anyone comment on the social atmosphere, food, etc about these halls?

Add if I'm missing anything. And also, do u guys know when the buildings under construction (noteable on the map) will be completed??

Sorry, I'm just very confused about these things right now lol.
Thanks a bunch.

How did I get the idea that UCLA honors kids get priority housing?

IT SAYS SO ON THE UCLA HOUSING WEBSITE

Yeah Westow that map is updated with the construction areas and such. Hedrick North is basically done - if you drive by, you can look inside the rooms, which are all painted and such.

Obviously, they will try to get you into your first choice, but basically freshmen get last pick (after returning second and now third years), and yes that means the ones with honors and regents, UCLAclassof2009 (especially since everyone and their mom is in honors haha). Even when you return and get to choose your exact room, the "priority" doesn't do much - my roommate this year is a regent scholar, and his housing priority number sucked last year.
But don't worry about it too much - there is going to be a lot of housing available with the new buildings that should be open next year, so you should get your first or second choice.

yeah Icarus, from the looks of it, there wont be much of a housing shortage (unlike Berkeley), just maybe some specific preferences will not be met.

anyways the housing plans are found here:
<a href="http://www.housing.ucla.edu/housing_site/oncampus/rates.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.housing.ucla.edu/housing_site/oncampus/rates.htm</a>
i guess the food plan is included so no seperate registration for that =)
but what the heck is an "academic year social fee"? never heard of that b4

Oh its just money that goes to the PA's (Program Assistants) of each floor, so they can pay for social activities.

Alumni Scholars also get priority housing, or so they say. Who knows what will actually come of it.

Dykstra has a lounge on every floor. The lounges are mostly used for studying though.

Most of the freshmen in Dykstra live in triples...
It's worth it though D-luv :D

hell ya D-luv :)

But this is true - the lounges in Dykstra are used much more for studying than my lounge in Sproul last year was (which was much more of a social lounge hahah)

How exactly do you pronounce Dykstra? Is it like Dyke-stra or Dick-stra? Either one is not very appealing.

Lolz aim78, never thought about that.

haha its the first way, aim78 and westow
Dike-stra

has anyone heard good things about the Sproul Hall? i mean it's like close to campus and other amenities such as the Common resturant, Puzzels, Bruin Cafe, etc.
