yea. what is theme housing? i was thinking of fitness and wellbeing vs. academic enhancement.

What are the best dorms for transfers to go to?

Do you really need to send your picture?

theme housing is when your floor has a theme and most of the other people on your floor have that similar interest as you. your Resident Assistant or your Program Assistant will try to coordinate activities or socials that relate to that theme.

i am in the academic enhancement floor. we tend to get more quiet hours. people are interested in studying during the weekdays and study in the lounge together. there's also a lot of pre-meds on the floor. our resident assistant gives us "study bucks" if she sees us studying and we can trade those in later for some nice prizes. our resident assistant also coordinated a trip to the california science center to see body world II. there were also other activities throughout the year, and i think even the faculty-in-residence coordinated some of them. it's nothing big though.

i think the best part of it is that you get people with similar interests living on the floor.

i believe the themed floors are only in de neve evergreen and rieber for next year.

pixiedanzer-

yea its lottery, so as long as its in by may 2 eveyrone is treated the same (unless you are honors then youre special :)

so in general...it seems everyone is supporting res. halls!!!!...i took a housing tour yesterday and thought i was definitely going with plaza, but now im rethinking....is the social life really bad in plazas? do plaza people ever go to res halls to meet up with people or are they pretty isolated? yeah..anything other plus/minuses on both would be really appreciated

pixiedanzer: "I think it's lottery based so you're ok as long as you turn in before the deadline in may"
I think that means it won't matter if you turn it in before deadline.

And about the theme housing, it's just basically the activities that's planned for that building. It's not really anything so I would choose the type of housing as more important.

kfc4u..how do you know the theme floored housing is in de neve evergreen and reiber? if de neve is that new plaza, i would want to get that theme for sure. its mighty nice.

and another thing is that im debating between a double and a triple. how bad is a triple..because the rooms seem pretty small.

m8913s--
I heard the pictures that we submit on our housing app is for our ID cards...?

i thought you send in the bruin card pic separately along with the bruin card app?

wild guess maybe the housing app pic is for them to send to your roomate(s) so they know what you look like? haha...

<--- Dorm veteran

If I had to choose a highrise right now, I'd choose Sproul. Why? It has a new lobby, it's close to Covel and Rieber dining, you avoid that hill, and it's next to the offices of ORL and OCH.

Oh, and Bruin Cafe and Puzzles are close by so you can get fat.

After that, I'd choose Dykstra. Why? Great social scene.

Then Hedrick. Why? Best food.

Rieber comes up last...poor Rieber. She was my favorite, but with construction underway, she has become the least liveable of the three. Poor poor Rieber.

the body worlds exhibit was awesome. Did your themed housing group go to it becuase a lot are pre-med or because it's an academic type trip? I'm trying to decide what sort of theme would be best for me. If the academic one does stuff like that every year, that'd be neato.

How does the theme thing work? Does the RA choose the theme for you after you move in? And also, about the meningitis shot thing, how many people actually get the vaccination? Is it possible that I've already had it? Do a lot of people get the disease? And yea, which one is better, living in a double or a triple?

"pixiedanzer-

yea its lottery, so as long as its in by may 2 eveyrone is treated the same (unless you are honors then youre special" ~ yermama

haha i am in honors actually (well not officially becuase I have to write my essay still---will be doing that ASAP.) i didn't know that makes you special in housing priority though! cool! :)

UCLAri when will dear old Rieber's construction be finished?

"kfc4u..how do you know the theme floored housing is in de neve evergreen and reiber? if de neve is that new plaza, i would want to get that theme for sure. its mighty nice."

because i'm going to be a Program Assistant (PA) next year and i know this stuff LOL. whoever ends up at Sunset- Delta Terrace get's me as one of your PA's! hehe

yea de neve is that new plaza... well, built about 6 years ago.

"and another thing is that im debating between a double and a triple. how bad is a triple..because the rooms seem pretty small."

my word for triple in residence hall: ADEQUATE

that's what i always tell everyone. it looks small at first, but i havent heard any complaints about it. everything you need is available.

if you choose double at a residence hall, i would think you'd have a better chance ending up in hedrick or rieber only because those are the halls that have more available doubles for freshmen. the doubles in sproul and dykstra are probably taken up by 2nd and 3rd years already.

last but not least, SPROUL HALL ROCKS. if i had my choice, i'd live there again! it defines convenience like none other.

my RA tells me sproul isn't full yet! so some of you VERY LUCKY freshmen will be part of that 10% of freshmen who get to live there! of course, if you want to make friends with primarily freshmen, hedrick and rieber are the places to be. dykstra is balanced, half half. sproul is good because you have 2nd and 3rd years who can give you advice and stuff.

"Did your themed housing group go to it becuase a lot are pre-med or because it's an academic type trip?"

i think it's an academic type trip. the floor isn't just limited to pre-meds, although my RA is a science major.

having a themed floor isn't a major thing though. what's of more importance is your housing type and setup (res hall vs plaza, double vs triple, meal plan, etc) cuz that's where the money's going and that's all about comfort. themed floors are just minor extras.

"Does the RA choose the theme for you after you move in? "

no, themed floors are set by the Office of Residential Life.

"And also, about the meningitis shot thing, how many people actually get the vaccination? Is it possible that I've already had it?"

i believe you are required to submit proof of vaccination to the Ashe Center (on campus student health center). if you don't do this by spring quarter, they will put you on hold and drop all of your classes i believe. yes, it is possible that you've already done it... go check up with your doctor's office. besides, you're going to have to submit proof of it anyway, so might as well ask your doctor if you've done it already or not. i'm not sure about this but i believe you can also receive the shot at the ashe center too.

Meningitis shot is not required by UCLA, but I recommend it. I forget which vaccination is required - most likely it's Hep B.

I heard the pictures that we submit on our housing app is for our ID cards...?

no, your Bruincard picture is a separate thing. You'll have to send that in separately before your orientation session, and they'll mail you your bruincard a week or so before the session. I don't think anyone knows what the picture that housing requests is for. They don't send it to your roommates, its not for your bruincard, etc etc. I didn't send one in this year or last year - never heard a thing about it.

When will Rieber be finished?

When will the sun set for the last time? When will the last poet write of beauty? When will war last touch this fair earth?

I dunno. Just figure "a long time from now."
