Dorming in a Unit Benefits

Hiya everyone. I plan on living in a triple in either Unit 1, 2, or 3 for the first year, and I would like to know the benefits of doing so.

I already know about how it'll help me meet friends and what not, but what are some other things that come along with the price tag of $11,600? (For example, gym access, computer access, study room, food(?), etc.)

I'm looking at the estimated student budget:
UC Berkeley Financial Aid Office Cost of Attendance
and Housing and Utilities apparently costs $14,384. Anything I'm not accounting for when I pay the 11.6k for living expenses other than the fact that it's a triple?

Thanks!

Books are the main thing not included in your living expenses. There’s some other stuff, like if you occasionally want to eat out (you probably will), transportation home when you visit (especially if you’re OOS or SoCal and fly home). Other than that, everything is pretty much covered. Gym access is an additional $10 per semester, there is a study room on every floor if you need it, internet is included in your dorm fees, etc.

The units are really convenient, you get a furnished room and internet access/cable/all utilities are paid for. There are many lounges and libraries with computers/printers/scanners, and they have tutors/computer techs available there. And you get a meal plan which gets you into the dining commons (Cafe 3, Crossroads) where most people eat at least once a day and you can spend the meal points on snacks, frozen food, basic groceries and things like kleenex/garbage bags etc at Bear Market in Unit 3 or places on campus like GBC. And gym membership costs only $10/semester.

Basically, you will not be spending much additional money at all if you live in the dorms. The only things I regularly spend money on are eating out and shopping for clothes/stuff at Walgreens.

This is great news, haha. I was wondering why they wouldn’t allow three people to split the price of a single when a triple is the same size as a single. But now I understand…kinda. I live in San Jose, so it’s about an hour’s drive back home.

So lemme get this straight, there’s:

 1. Gym access for $10/semester
 2. Study rooms
 3. Internet access
 4. Cable(do people actually watch TVbesides sports?)
 5. Printers/scanners
 6. Tutors
 7. Meal plan

Thanks for your input guys.

I have a small TV in my room and we have Glee/Gossip Girl/ANTM watching parties pretty regularly lol. House and Chuck too.

Ahhh, cool. I tried watching the first three shows you named once, but they didn’t really appeal to me, lol

House is cool tho

Really bring a TV, you are paying for Cable. At least bring a USB TV tuner for your computer if you are space conscious.

Ahh, definitely. Thanks for the tip.

ahh i LOVE gossip girl! at least the first season was good! and third was pretty good too…except i dont watch tv anymore…so idk if i’d bring a tv to my dorm lol cuz i get too distracted. i hope my roommate doesnt! haha i guess i can go somewhere else and hope they’ll watch something that i hate lol

i don’t know why ppl hate dorms so much other than: 1 expensive 2 such small space although other UCs are even smaller (cough LA cough)

i didnt actually hate the dorms that much and i’ve hated every other dorm ive seen before. it might just be becuz im almost forced to go to berkeley becuz that’s the only good skool i got into lol no jk…but i think it’s also cuz my host that i stayed with, was so close with her roommates and it almost seemed like they all had their own space and they didn’t have any problems with their dorm. they all seemed comfortable. no one was in the shower or bathroom when i used it and they weren’t in a mini suite. although…i dont think there was a changing area so i had to change on a wet floor lol (i asked them what they do, and they said they just come back to the room and change). but yeah if u need more space, i guess…that might be a problem. i like to sit on the bunk bed cuz that’s good to me : ] it’s kinda weird…it never really bothered me.

I would say the benefit is that you don’t have to search for housing your freshman year. With the transition from HS to College, you should focus more on the education part more than finding a place to live.

@Berry: I don’t think you should come in with the mindset that you are “forced” to go to Berkeley. It’s a privilege and should not be something you feel is something you HAVE to do. There are plenty of other good schools out there.

lol I know I’m not “forced” to go, but I guess what I meant was that other people have options between say, USC, UCLA, UCB, and NYU, while I have one option. All of my other schools were lower end schools like Chapman, Pepperdine, etc. They are all good schools, but you’re right. It is a privilege to go to Berkeley! I keep forgetting how lucky I am to even get IN there because if I didn’t get in, I would’ve ended up miserable. No jk but I LOVE Berkeley now, after visiting it. I guess it made my decision easier, since I almost knew for a fact that I was going to Berkeley.

can’t forget ping pong tables, billiard pool, and foosball.

and they’re rather clean. the custodians keep the place pretty nice! :)

PING PONG?? Awesomeeee. I am ping pong pro.

ahhh i LOVE ping pong. EVERY hotel in india has a ping pong table and its AWESOME. My brother and I used to play ALL the time! I would be in that room all day when I go to Berkeley. I’ll experience all the things I’ve been deprived from: Piano, Ping Pong Tables, San Francisco City Life, etc.! lol jk
