Dorming Question

My friend and I might go to Riverside for Fall of 2011.

My friend is a Public Health major and Im a Pre-Business Major.

Can people with different majors dorm together?

Yes. Just make sure both of you put down each others name on the dorm application. Also dont select any themed halls ie. pre business, engineering, pre med. etc…

Ok thanks!

Also, is it a BAD IDEA to dorm with a friend from highschool?? we arent best friends, but were pretty close. we share similar interests but neither one of us is clingy.

If we decide not to dorm together can we atleast make sure that we are in the same hall?

personally, i think it is a bad idea to dorm with a friend from high school. living with a friends often ruins friendships, because you guys will find out every single annoying habit each other has. haha. anyways, dorming with a random person is something you only get to do once in a lifetime, and it’s a good learning experience. Also, if you dorm with someone you know, you might end up hanging out with that person 24/7 simply because that’s the safe thing to do, and it’s easier and less scary than having to make a whole bunch of new friends. but that depends on your personality. that’s my take on it.

unfortunately, you can only request the same room, not the same hall. =/

Yeah that’s what I’ve heard and totally agree.
No I mean can both my friend and I be in the same hall if we ask for it? Like she signs with a Hall and I sign up for the same thing (with a different roomate?)

@splash93 - I don’t think so. But the dorms are so close that you guys will be hanging out together anyways (with new friends) unless you are super lazy and can’t walk

just wondering, how are the bathrooms in the dorms? I mean, I want to meet lots of people, but I also want some space to study and stuff. I heard that in pentland people don’t really socialize much. So which dorm would be better?

Also, I’m planning to go to Riverside for Fall and one of my close friends is planning to dorm with me, is it really discouraged?

@LizzieVGT - Pentland has “private” bathrooms meaning that you share the bathroom and shower with just a few people rather than the whole hall. Lothian and AI have the traditional communal bathrooms.

I live in Pentland and my building is actually pretty social. People leave their doors open or go out to the lounge and everyone’s pretty chill with each other. It might be harder to socialize in Pentland because you have little suites instead of a big hall. But if you just go and introduce yourself to people in the beginning of the year, it’s easy to make friends. It depends on what type of people live in your building, honestly…Some Pentland buildings are like anti-social and some are really loud, so I’ve heard.

Like others said it’s supposedly not the best idea to dorm with a friend. I dormed with a random person, but really everyone will have a difference experience. Even if you don’t dorm with your friend you can always like go to their dorm and hang out with them too :)

thanks. how early should I reserve my housing to make sure that I will get the one I want

I’d try to do it as early as possible. It’s first come first serve so if you figure out who you want to dorm with and where you want to dorm then go for it.
