Dorming vs Commuting For Stern Freshmen

What are the advantages and disadvantages with dorming in NYU specifically for Stern? Are there certain opportunities one may miss out? As for commuters, how well will they get to know their fellow sternies? Basically, is their enough of a benefit dorming as a Stern freshman to offset the expense?

Where are you commuting from? There’s a difference between “I’m commuting from an apartment in the West Village” vs. “I’m commuting from NJ every day”. If we knew a little more, it would help us answer your questions.

If i commute, it would be from Queens and it would take around 2 hours daily (both coming and going).

Honestly for anyone in college, I would recommend dorming for at least a semester (doesn’t matter if you’re in Stern or otherwise). Dorming gives you experiences that you won’t get commuting.

Of course it also depends on your situation, obviously. If you can’t afford it then it might not be worth it.

That said I think it’s a lot easier to meet people and be active as someone who dorms. In my circle of friends there’s a commuter, but she had to reach out to people in order to be active. If you’re a shy type of person then dorming on campus might help with that – but then again this is NYU so you have to be assertive anyhow. That said, due to commuting, she often misses a lot of things and it can be stressful going back and forth, but she makes it work.
