Dormitory Background Information

It might be simpler than you think. If your parents are divorced, and you live with your mom the majority of the time, only her information is needed for the FAFSA. If your dad has funds set aside (either in a savings account or a special college savings account often called a “529 plan”) it won’t matter and the FAFSA will not count it. Now he can totally send you money and you can use it, but it won’t impact your financial aid. That’s a good thing.

I don’t live with my mom the majority of the time, I live with my mom all the time. I only see my dad maybe 3/365 each year. So whenever I apply for FAFSA, I only need to document her finances and stuff.

Sweet. :)

I think the FM Estimated Contribution was something around $8,500.

I come from a single mom household too - that was not far off my EFC and it still kinda screwed us over.

Do you still get child support? If its a good amount, make sure you you figure that out because theres a question on there that asks if so, how much – and all based on the previous year.

Anyway, beware!

Earlier I had posted a thread about the colleges that I think I’m going to apply to. I’ve narrowed down my list a little bit using Collegeboard’s College MatchMaker, and these are the results.

4 year; Large university; Athletic Training Degree; Cost < 35K; AR TX OK
Oklahoma State University
University of Texas - Austin
University of Texas - Arlington
Texas State University - San Marcos

4 year; Medium university; Athletic Training Degree; Cost < 35K; AR TX OK
Baylor University
Texas Christian University

I don’t think I included Child Support on the EFC Calculator, although I’m unsure. Yes, we get child support and it’s really close to the maximum amount alloted in the State of Texas. I’m sure that will throw off the figure and screw me over.

At least realistically speaking, seems like it would. In the EFC Calculator I was really just playing around with figures. We didn’t actually research any of the numbers to see if they lined up with the income statements, or taxes, etc.

Well if you have any doubts about the FAFSA and you’re still in high school; there should be a career center lady/man at school that would answer your questions; or else a UT finaid counselor. They helped me!

We have a career counselor, but I don’t really like the counseling office at school.
