dorms 101

I'm going to be an incoming frosh for 2006 @ RPI and it would be awesome if someone could rate the dorms in terms of social life and fun for me. I'm really extroverted so I would love to be with other late-night party animals. I hear Barton is really quiet and Cary is insane? any truth there?

Well...I'm at Bray right now...I love it there, and i'm glad I chose it...ok now i'll try to stay somewhat un-biased.

Quad:
pro: close to classrooms (very!!! like 2-10 min away)! chance to meet upperclassmen. Sage dining hall is like 2-3 min away!
con: Sage dining hall closes on weekends, so you have to go to commons (bout 5 min) on the weekends to eat. Also the rooms are kind of small.

Barh:
pro: meet a lot of upperclassman, there's a dining hall right on the first floor of the dorm.
con: very far from classes (10-25 min) but there is a shuttle

Bray, cary, crockette, nason:
pro: near commons dining hall (2 min tops), you get to know each other in the hall pretty well (depending whether you have girls in your hall or not...usually if there are girls then it's more social)
con: kind of far from classes (5-15 min), don't get to meet upperclassmen as much.

Hall: same as the other ones but smoking is permited...

Barton: same distance from classes as the other freshman dorms.
pros: very nice dorms (even with triple cause they bunk two of the beds). Air condition in the hotter months (usefull!)

In the beginning, round early to mid september there is RUSH week. It's where all the frats come around freshman dorms and invite them to look at there houses. Usually from there, or your friends you'll start to get invited to parties, but you could always try to go to parties on your own. Also, Barton is kind of anti-social because of their spacious rooms, the people tend to stay inside more. I guess you could say Cary is insane, but it also depends on your hallmates and who your RA (residential assistant is). What I like about my hall (and it goes for hall, cary, crockette, nason) is that because the rooms aren't the biggest (but they aren't too small) and it does get cold sometimes, we usually end up going out into the hall and talking. I think that's even why our hall got to know each other so well, we slowly ended up playing games in the lounge, talking to one another from just living near each other.

About the Cary part being insane...I do know some stories (but it's because of who the guy was)... The guy got really drunk that night and he had two girls with him...so he ended up fooling around with both girls and then afterwards the guy decided he wanted to shower. So, on his way to the shower, after stripping and using his towel as a cover he grabbed what he believed to be shampoo (but it was a ketchup bottle instead) and started to walk into the hall towards the shower. Somehow on the way he lost his towel and ended up passing out right near the bathroom door (still in the hallway). Some guys decided to play a prank on him and instead of waking him up, they decorated him with the ketchup and left him there to sleep. I bet the way the story spread through CC was because he was woken up by a tour group traveling through Cary in the morning.

wow, thanks a lot. I think that I'll most def. go for Cary or another one of the freshman hill dorms then. Few other questions: how is the ultimate frisbee club @ rpi? My friend goes to RU and the ultimate frisbee club there is known for stuff like the ketchup story. Also, for girls, is greek life really big or is it mainly frats?
