Dorms and all that other fun stuff!!!!

Thanks Lily and dfleish for the detailed posts! They really helped out. Also, is the process of choosing housing random? I mean we list our choices but that does not mean we will get any of the top choices, right? Is it first come first serve or completely random?

Well, it's not first come first serve. I am pretty sure most of it is a random lottery. I do know that the res college apps are judges separately as well though, so that part isn't random (the head of the res college reads the apps and then decides who's living there).

hey dfleish, if I put down 3 res colleges for my top 5, do I have to write 3 separate essays?

also, where do I get these "res college apps" i keep hearing about....I didn't know housing stuff was out yet

It isn't out yet- don't worry!

No, there is one extended application if you are applying to live in ANY res college.

Alright thanks. That's a relief

Hey what about the other ones, like Shepard?

Another question, what's in a dorm? Is there a bathroom in each dorm, or is it per floor? How about kitchens (or at least a fridge?)

For the most part, bathrooms are found on each floor. That is unless you are living in a suite arrangement, and then there are bathrooms in the suite. In my dorm (sarge) there is a 'kitchen' on one of the floors with a microwave, oven, stove, and big fridge. However, you are allowed to have a fridge in your room and there is even a rental option that you will hear about when fall comes. Other than that, the dorms have lounges(usually have a big screen, pool table, foosball, ping pong, possibly air hockey), and of course some have dining halls

Microwaves are not allowed in rooms, but... well, no one cares. Put a towel over it or something. Fridges are allowed that are "small enough" (heh, right). Willard has 2 guys and 2 girls bathrooms in each floor. It has a ****ty, basically non-functioning kitchen; it's worth it to just get a microwave.

I don't know anything about Shepard except I don't think I've ever met someone who lives there.

I have a few friends who either live or have lived in Shepard. A lot of really cool people live there, in my opinion.

Shepard is right in front of Allison ... good location, i don't know how the rooms are but it has a lot of music majors i think. Chapin has the biggest doubles on campus and i believe also a lot of music majors. the location of chapin is similar to that of willard. chapin has a bad reputation in terms of social-ness and i've heard that shepard can be pretty dead, too. of course, it all depends on what you like.

of course i'm a bit biased, but i'd say put allison as your number one! honestly, we have some of the biggest rooms, the best facilities, a decent dining hall and a great location. plus, people here tend to be really outgoing and friendly, there's a huge mix of majors and years (good amount of sophomores). willard is also really cool and the rooms are awesome, personally i just don't like the location as much.

That's probably Willard's biggest downside. Being close to Evanston is amazing, but it's SO FAR from a lot of campus locations. You really need to want it.

Are there any substance-free dorms on campus? If so, which would be the most convenient for an econ major?

gyro (or anyone else), whats the deal with Sargent? Is it upperclassmen only, or can freshman live there? Is it north or south? How are the facilities, and how do you like it?

Sargent is north. Freshmen can live there; it's not known for being super social but I know people that live there that like it fine. It has a good dining hall.

there are substance-free hallways in plex, i believe ... healthy living, it's called. i don't know for sure, check the housing website. i might be confusing it with one of the res colleges like isrc.

how about bikes? do most people use them to get around campus easier? Is it werid? I want to live up North b/c i am doing a sport.... are most classes in the south?

soo.. this is unrelated to dorms in a way.. but I was wondering how people usually get to know each other at Northwestern. Do most of your friends come from your dorm or your classes? How do you usually get to know people and do the grades mix? (like.. freshmen mixing with sophomores, juniors, seniors)

Most of my closest friends are those that live right near me in my dorm. Plus I gained a lot of new close friends by going greek as well- it's a great way to expand your social circle. I don't meet that many people in classes if they're lecture-style, but it's easy to meet people in smaller discussion classes. (It's also easier in SESP since the school is so small.) Most dorms will have mingling between sophomores and freshmen; greek life will add juniors and seniors to the mix. Otherwise, get involved on campus; clubs and groups are the easiest ways to make new friends outside of your dorm.

By the way, Plex will not be open to freshman!!!

Hi Everyone!
Would current NU students please give some info on the following dorms; Willard, Allison, Shepard, 1835 Hinman, Chapin. I have heard that these are all really great dorms in their own rights, but I am having trouble picking one. I am a social person, but I don't party that much (I think this will change a bit though when I finally get to college). I am quite studious, but I just want a dorm where I can have a balance of the two. I would really appreciate any insight. Thanks!
