Dorms and Philly

I have two questions:

1) How would you all describe Philly (in particular, in relation to UPenn)? Does the city have the character of Boston? New York? Are there student hangouts around campus, such as coffee shops, or do students generally go into the heart of the city, rather than staying in and around campus?

2) Does anybody know where I can find pictures of UPenn's dorms?

Thanks, guys.

Philly, imo, is a great city that doesn't deserve the bad rap it receives... it certainly has its own character, but is a metropolitan place, too. i think students hang out not only on/near campus, but in center city, too (it's w/ in walking distance of campus)...

Like all historic cities, it is a city of neighborhoods, districts, streets, etc. It's quite an impressive mix altogether!

One of my best friends did a summer program at Penn and LOVED it. I think that there's always going to be a good/bad side to every major city, but I haven't really heard anything negative.

According to my friend, there are a lot of coffee shops/hangouts, and it isn't really the "typical" city school - it seems to have a somewhat-campus from what she said.

Plus, you're about 45 minutes away from the Jersey Shore/Atlantic City. ;-)

The only place worse than Philadelphia is Atlantic City!

Right...if only Philadelphia were as interesting and dynamic as Camden, Baltimore, Trenton, Newark, Omaha, New Haven, Providence, Durham, Detroit....

If my eyes were rolling any harder they'd roll right out of my head.

Sounds awesome. I got a good feel for the dorms from the link that CDN posted, but I still have one more question:

Any chance of Freshman singles? Or single bedrooms within a suite?

I don't want to become an isolationist, but I still want, if possible, to retain a liiiiitle privacy. Only school so far I know of that has singles for Freshman is Columbia; from what I hear, quite a few Freshman have singles, which are grouped together, overcoming the solidarity and retaining the privacy. What about Penn?

There are singles available, particularly in the Quad. Many of them are extremely small, but do offer some privacy.

My single is almost as big as my friend's double down the hall. Hill has some very big singles (doubles that only have one bed). I also have a friends with very tiny singles.

I live in a single and am one of two singles in the hall (the other is inhabited by a sophomore). The rest of the hall is freshmen in doubles and I am far from isolated. I have friends who have singles in halls full of singles and they never see their hallmates. It mostly depends on the dynamics of your hall and your personality. Some halls are very social. Some halls are very antisocial.
