I'm extremely confused about the process of applying to dorms and searching for a roommate. Can anyone please guide me through the processes?

Hi. My name is Rob and I’m a Binghamton University Student Ambassador.

You will be able to sign-up for housing, assuming you’ve paid your deposit for the fall, starting on April 16th at 4PM EST. You can sign-up on this site: [Binghamton University - Residential Life](http://reslife.binghamton.edu/)

After that time, you can go on there. There will be a very easy process where you can select which housing communities you’d prefer to live in by ranking them from 1 to 5 (1 being the one you like the most). There will be some other limited options that you can select (chem-free housing, smoking or non-smoking, etc.), but it’s mostly just ranking 1-5 all the communities. Residential Life will try to give you housing in your 1st or 2nd choice, although I’ve never heard of students that were placed in housing that they DIDN’T love, even if ResLife had to give them their 3rd choice.

As for finding a roommate, you have two options. If you know anyone who’s coming to Binghamton and want to room with them (or if you find someone online who you want to room with), you can each put the other’s name in the housing sign-ups form and you’ll room together for your freshman year. Otherwise, you’ll be randomly paired with another freshman for the year. Most people choose to be randomly placed, and the great majority of them have no issues with their roommate. If you do have any issues, we have a lot of resources to help you resolve them.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Sincerely,
Rob Clark

Hi rob,
How would you recommend that transfer students find roommates? I’m transferring and ill be a sophomore in the fall. Thanks!

Another option is to try and meet someone through the class site Binghamton sets up on facebook. My son did that and it worked out great!

My son got his absolute last choice for a dorm (Hinman) but had a great year there in a suite.

Sam7194: I would recommend just going with a random roommate unless you have a friend coming to Binghamton as well. I did that and got a great roommate - it’s a great way to meet someone who you may not have met otherwise.

I want to get a 4-person suite in Mountainview with three other people, but the dorm request application only allows me to put in one other person’s e-mail. How do I add my other two roommates?

teelaxi: I would send an e-mail to ResLife at housing@binghamton.edu and ask them that question. They’ll be best able to answer for you.
