Dorms and Wifi

Do these colleges have wifi in their dorms.

(i'm a guy)

Cal Poly Pomona

Cal Poly SLO

UC Irvine

UC Santa Barbara

UC Davis

Cal State San Jose

Yes/No

I'm planning to get ethernet cable too. Please include how many feet I should get for each if they have Yes as answers. Thank you!

They should. I’ve heard that all campuses have wifi.

General rule of thumb, just use ethernet, wifi sucks on school campuses.

SJSU DOES NOT have Wifi in their dorms outside of the lounges. It sucks because the dorm internet is extremely slow while the WiFi is at least respectable.

@icedrgaon - Wifi definitely does not suck on ALL school campuses. I cant speak for any of the mentioned, but at my school, U of Maryland, we played starcraft 2 and other online games online on wifi easily. Speedtest gave wifi around 10/2 MB/s if im not mistaken

I heard from a friend’s brother that UCI does not have wifi in their dorm. He just went to UCI to dorm there 4 days ago

Apparently UCI does not provide wireless internet service in the dorms but they invite students to set up wireless access points themselves: [url=<a href=“http://resnet.uci.edu/policy/connection_policy.asp]Resnet”>http://resnet.uci.edu/policy/connection_policy.asp]Resnet Policies and Connection Guidelines/url

What’s the recommended ethernet length that will work for most colleges? My friend’s brother got recommendation for a 25 ft ethernet cable xD and that’s what he went with.

I would just go ahead and get an Ethernet cord, just in case the wifi is really slow. I would think 25-30 feet would be more than plenty for any dorm room.

I had a 10 or 12 ft ethernet cable. A few times I wish it had been longer (it didn’t quite reach my favorite corner of the room) and at other times it felt way too long (especially when I was at my desk and too lazy to roll up the extra cord).

It’s always better to get bigger cat 5 cables so you can move your computer if needed, or it’s far from outlet. If you don’t need the extra length, just tie it.

any non-third-world uni ought to have a decent wifi connection in its dorms.

Sadly, Cal Poly Pomona does not have any wifi in their dorms

I would bring an ethernet cord to any dorm, for a stronger connection.

Why? A wired connection is always going to be more reliable, and you can easily use a router if you need wireless (just don’t tell anyone the password, or else they’ll eat your bandwidth!)

UW had crappy wi-fi in the dorms, or fast ethernet. Around campus there was good wi-fi though.

How long would you recommend me getting? 6ft? 12ft? etc.

Uci has wifi on campus but not in the dorms. However you can always take an Ethernet cable or set up a router

Get at least 10 ft. I messed up and brought only a 6 ft one last year, and the internet box was on the complete opposite side as my desk, so I had to buy a longer one.

Thanks. I was about to make the same mistake like you did. lmao.

12’ should be enough unless your dorm is a suite/mini apartment. Brand and cable quality do not matter for cables this short.
