is there a survey? can we request a roomate?

It's far from random. In fact, from what I read it's one of the most elaborate ways I've heard of getting a roommate. First you fill out a Living Preference Questionnaire. Then there's this system called CHARMS were you can look at possible matches (anonymously) and exchange messages with them until you find the best fit. It sounds like a dating service for dorms but I like the idea. More info here:

so does this mean we can request somebody we already know? or do we have to do it in a clandestine manner haha

From the housing FAQs:

How do I request a particular person as my roommate?
You may request a particular roommate by entering his/her NetID in part two of the roommate selection process. If you filled out your Living Preference Questionnaire by June 19, you will receive an email on June 20 directing you to log on to part two. Roommate requests will be honored only if both students request each other. You should ask your potential roommate for his/her NetID in order to facilitate this request. The Housing Office will not furnish NetIDs to third parties.

The chief purpose of CHARMS, I think, is that if you get stuck with a psycho roommate, the school can say it's your fault.

Only sort of kidding. Regardless, I know some people that agreed to room through CHARMS and it worked great, some others it didn't, and the same thing for random pairings. Most of the people on my freshman floor continued to live with their same roommates sophomore year, and a few still live together now.
