Hey people!

I will be at UCR from 17th September until 16th of December for studying. Does anyone know a dorm where I can have lots of partys, a pool and still have solid surroundings? (e.g. no crime around, no mold, no roaches etc.)

I have heard that for example the grand marc is in horrible condition though they have a beautiful pool and great partys. But I would like to have both for an affordable price. Can anyone help me? Thank you so much!!! :)

Well it would be great if you could first figure out the difference between a dorm and an apartment before you run off partying. As for your question, you probably won’t find a place that will match every description you listed (only exception will be apartments far away from campus). Meaning, you won’t find a place that will have all the perks; there will always be trade-offs in what a place offers. Your best bet is to figure out which two you want most (but you cant pick all three), and deduct from there:

Great Pools/Good Place to host parties

Solid Surroundings/Low Crime/Clean

Cheap Price/Affordability

I also can’t help but notice that it might be a bit late to get a good place if you’ve just started looking for one now
but good luck.

I prefer no. 1 and 2. I’m not that ambitious, but roaches and gunfights are way too much for me… but maybe that is because in Germany we usually have no such thing as gunfights and in the US it’s common?

Anyways I figured out Sterling does not sound so bad. It is realy expensive though. But that’s alright with me. Any experience with that place anyone?

The reviews on yelp do sound bad but I actually think they camped it up a little… ;)

Thanks for your reply Integral!

Well, I wouldn’t really say “gun fights,” because that would be over-exaggerating. Its more like a knife and gun display, its all for show; no one has really been stabbed or shot for the two years I’ve been here. But rest assured, if you frequent walks at night with expensive things on you, be careful. As for the roaches, I don’t think its such a common problem. Most of my friends, who live in different apartments, have not complained about bug problems, so I have to assume its not a big deal.

All of the off-campus apartments within a one-mile radius of UCR suck. Sterling probably sucks the least but it still sucks. A really good friend of mine lives there and I hang out there a lot, probably more than my own place. He really loved it at first but now he cannot wait for his lease to finish at the end of this month. From my buddy’s own words, here’s what to expect.

Pros
-Nice pool and clubhouse. They have coffee and sometimes cookies everyday. A lot of events with free food.
-Rooms are new
-Fully furnished, includes washer and dryer
-Haven’t heard of any robberies
-There are parties but they kind of suck.

Cons
-Expensive
-Terrible parking
-Bad management. If you need to speak to someone, find Ashley, Tony, or Jessica. They are the nicest and most helpful.
-The whole utilities thing is crap.
-Noise. The people in the parking lot and hallways ****ing suck. There are always fights.
-Building 1, first floor hallway, had a few dead roaches at some point that were there for a while.
-Elevators and floors are nasty as hell. Many times it would smell like pee or poop.
-A lot of the residents are terrible. People who live here love to destroy property, leave trash around, drive like jerks, and ring doorbells in the middle of the night.
-Someone was stabbed here during a party.
-Thin walls: the amount of slamming doors and karaoke he hears is ridiculous.
-Night patrols are a joke.

42327119, thank you for that overview. When this is the place that sucks the least, I think it will be my destination. I also think I can handle the noise for the 3 months I will stay there.

One last question if I may: They offered me a room, but move-in day is the 21st. I will arrive at the 17th. Any recommendations where I can stay close to campus to bridge the time till then and maybe have a internet connection?
I’m also afraid of the move-in day. They told me that EVERYONE will move in at that date. This sounds pretty nasty to me. Is it as bad as I imagine it will be? There must be hundrets of students waiting for their roomkeys…

I think there are 3 hotels close by Sterling. There’s a Courtyard Marriott down the street from campus and I’m sure they have internet. To kill time, there are food places and a movie theater nearby or you can take the bus (the fare is free with a UCR id) to a mall.

If I remember correctly, I think each floor got a separate move-in time. And it will probably be faster than last year because not every single person is moving in this time.

Courtyard Marriott is 100 $ a night, thats off my limit
I thought of a motel or something like that… no pool etc, just a room to rest for 5 days. The internet is because I would like to tell my family and friends that everything is fine. But they can wait for 5 more days if this saves me that amount of money unless I have a prepaid card or internet.

There’s a Motel 6 close by and they have free Wi-Fi. I think this place is the cheapest and closest.

You are brilliant, thank you so much!

Will you be visiting Sterling again in the next semester? If so, feel free to come around. You definitely deserve a drink or something for your help.

(Dear public, I would write a private mesage but thats only allowed after 15 posts, excuse the inconvenience )

I’m allowed to read them though, I would appreciate it if you could send me your email. Cheers!
