Dorms as a Transfer?

Where are all the transfers planning on staying? I've been prowling around here and the consensus seems to be Wada (located in Unit 2, considered off-campus, reserved for upper-division). Its off-campus status would likely reduce my financial aid, though I'm not entirely sure it would since my room and board aren't being covered. So, disregarding the financial aid factor, is Wada the way to go? I originally didn't think I'd mind being around freshmen in the dorms, but now I'm wondering if they'll pretty much ALL be freshmen. Granted, there wouldn't be much of an age difference (2 years), so it's not like I couldn't relate.

I'm also contemplating a single.

Factors to consider:
Noise level
Cost
Social aspect (not a war zone, but not a morgue either)
Privacy
Space (I'm assuming the regular triples are awful to live in)
Roommates

What about a double in a mini-suite? Triple in a mini-suite? Which unit would you recommend and why?

If there are any transfers out there, I'd love to know your preferences! Also, what are continuing upper-division students doing? I'm assuming most are probably going off-campus.

I don’t have much to add here, just that I’d like to know the same things, especially regarding the financial aspect. It’s also fairly important to me to have a single room, and it looks like Wada has only double or triple. I’m a quiet person, but don’t mind sound, and I’d prefer to be around other upper-division students. I’m a female and don’t care whether the housing is all-female or coed. Does anyone know of housing that would match my (fairly undemanding) preferences?

Singles are unlikely, the only housing with a lot of singles is Martinez Commons (apartments, shiny and new, pretty popular, no freshmen). Martinez also has reshalls, I think those are reserved for non-freshmen as well, pretty sure they’re all doubles.

I’m in a mini-suite (double, Unit 1) this year… it’s okay. The rooms are nice and pretty large, attached bathroom is a plus. The floor is almost all freshmen, only one other transfer and a handful of sophomores. It’s not too bad though, mini-suites/suites tend to be a bit quieter, which is nice for studying. I’ve heard normal triples (highrise in I forget what unit) are awful, my current roommate transferred in from there and says her old triple was half the size of our double.

Anyway, I’d say go for Wada/Martinez. Upper div, apartments, chance of a single, no forced meal plan, etc. Otherwise just decide whether you want a suite/mini-suite/normal, or what location you like most.

I’ll knock regular triples off the list then. I’m leaning toward a mini-suite double right now. How about mini-suite triples? They’re cheaper, but I’m wondering if they’d be too crowded.

The area around Martinez looks like it’s under construction.

I doubt it’ll be over by the time Fall rolls around, so I’ll pass on that one.

@seafarer: What’s your reasoning for getting a single? The main pro of a single for me is simply being able to work on my own schedule and have some downtime if I need it. I’m pretty sociable, but being around people 24/7 can get taxing. Everyone needs a sanctuary.

I’m sure disabled students have top priority, but Cal’s not going to leave rooms empty. It’d be pointless. Chances of getting one are slim, but not none.

I’ve heard that Clark Kerr is pretty quiet, but it’s probably too quiet for my taste. Good food is a plus, but the social aspect is more of a priority for me. It’s also quite a distance from campus.

Looks pretty isolated to me. Away from the action.

(I’ll sign your petition, btw. Why not!)

It’s the same for me. Although I might not mind a double too much, I prefer being by myself at “home” on occasion. Too bad the singles are so difficult to come by!

Thanks for the info, failure (not trying to call you failure …) Martinez is looking good to me right now.

How does Channing-Bowditch compare to Martinez and Wada for transfer students?

Bumping this thread because I’m also interested in transfer housing options. Currently leaning toward Wada.

When I was at Cal, Martinez was just a parking lot across from Channing-Bowditch, so I can’t be of much help there. However, I did live at both Wada and Chan-Bo. I would take Chan-Bo over Wada any day. Wada rooms have concrete walls, floors (under industrial carpets, that is), and ceilings. The check-in procedure is a little more secure (Chan-Bo has no desk jockeys). Also, access to Unit 2’s gym is nice. But, Chan-Bo is more like an actual apartment. It’s also a little bit farther north from People’s Park, which is a bit dicey in the wee hours of the morning.
