Dorms at GW

So I have been accepted to attend GW in the Fall and I am so excited. I just submitted my deposit but next down the line of things to do is housing. I am clueless about GW housing. I hear Thurston is the place to be from some people and others said it is horrible. Any comments on housing, where to live, what is best, ect.? I really want to make sure I live in the best place I possibly can. Also, do you guys recommend random rooming or rooming with people you know? I don't really know many people there but I am sure through facebook I can find people with similar interests. PLEASE HELP! and thanks in advance!

Great questions! My daughter just got into GWU and will asking the same things, so I will looking for responses. Hope you get lots!

hey, I’m in the same position as you. First off, you might want to check GW’s housing site and check rates for different dorms, because some are more expensive than others. There is a fb group (which I’m apart of) it’s a closed group for people looking for roommates. If you’re unsure about whether or not you want to meet someone off fb you can still join and see if there is anyone who you might get along with. Everyone on there is really nice and I’m actually messaging a girl right now, and we’re thinking about rooming together.
I can’t give you advice on specific dorms (because I’m not sure myself!), but I think that going to an admitted students day would help (if you can). That’s what I’m doing, so hopefully I’ll be able to decide which dorm is best for me! Good luck!

My daughter is a freshman at GW now. The kids with the best chance of getting a dorm on the Foggy Bottom campus were those accepted ED. 700 of the freshman are on the Vern. They weren’t really clear about that when we were signing up for housing. Say you want a bigger dorm, so that you may get Thurston on FB. However, if you want quiet - you don’t want Thurston! I also caution kids to find another student to room with via Facebook, etc. You may end up really not liking that person and feel obligated to stay because you chose to room together. My daughter let the fates take her to her roommate and has had a fantastic year! They will be rooming together again next year. Every kid she knows who roomed together via Facebook, etc. has a nightmare story to share with her!

I’m a current freshman that lives in a quad in Thurston. Thurston was NOT my first choice, but I was accepted to a program that required that I live there. However, it really has made my freshman year unforgettable. I’m definitely not a huge partier and I’ve loved living here. The reputation makes Thurston sound a lot worse than it actually is. I’ve never had a problem with not being able to sleep because people are too loud. It’s a great freshman year experience–you meet so many people and become really close with your floor. I can’t imagine what I’m going to do next year when I’m with people that possibly aren’t as social as Thurston residents are.

In response to what bostonguido wrote, I chose one of my roommates and the other two were randomly assigned to me. The one that I chose to live with and I have become very close and we’re living together next year. The other two are really awful–incredibly disrespectful, obnoxious, and loud people. Lots of people I know that went random hate their roommates too, so I really think it all comes down to luck. People lie their faces off on the housing survey, so it’s pretty much the same deal no matter what you decide to do. Choosing my roommate and knowing that I had at least one person that I’d probably like did make me feel a lot less worried when I was moving in, because it made me feel like I’d have at least one friend.

I’ve heard placement in Vern is orientated towards certain program (e.g. women’s leadership) and the vast majority of those who room at Vern are woman. I believe upward of 70-75% of the freshman class resides at Foggy Bottom.

okay im a junior still but i have 5 friends at GW and i was actually talking to two of them about dorms.

No to thurston. its dirty. but can be fun.

Yes to potomac. its nicer and close to thurston so you wont feel left out and you can visit thurston whenever.

Apparently Lafayette is a really nice one too but there are less people in it.

but if you’re not ED you’ll probably be in thurston?

Thurston is a lot of fun- I started with random roommates, and it was fine. I never roomed with them again, but we got along and still hang out. I say try it.

There’s plenty of options for housing. Fear not.

[Viable Alternatives to Sub-Par GW Housing | The GW Patriot](http://www.gwpatriot.com/2011/04/24/viable-alternatives-sub-par-gw-housing/)

I just finished my freshman year at GW, and going in I had a lot of questions about housing. I ended up choosing to live in west hall because it was brand new even though it was on the Vern. I loved it. I had my own bedroom as did my three other roommates. It had kitchens on every floor and a beautiful gym in the basement. A lot of my friends that lived in Thurston, two of whom I will be living with next year, wished they had lived on the Vern because of the space/cleanliness/atmosphere.

I just finished freshmen year and thurston is not as bad as people say. As long as you get a triple or quad.

I just finished my freshman year, and I lived in Crawford Hall, which is one of the smaller buildings on Foggy Bottom. I highly recommend a smaller dorm like this one or Madison. The location is great (next to library and J Street), and it’s slightly quieter than the other dorms on Foggy. However, there is still a lot going on there and everyone in the building gets to know each other, as each dorm houses fewer than 200 students.

I left my roommate situation up to chance, and I’m so glad I did. We weren’t best friends, but still got along really well.

Whatever you choose, the key is making the most of it (and if the situation is awful, you can do roomswap!).

Good luck!

Can someone give me a brief overview of the Junior year housing options, or rank them?

I would this information also…

So I just wanted to update this for people who are considering GW who might run into this site. I ended up living in Thurston and absolutely love it! I have three roommates and while we do not get along all the time, living in Thurston has been great. You definitely feel more included and a part of the college experience. People made Thurston sound like some horrifying dirty place but when I actually got here I saw it first-hand and realized it’s totally fine. It’s a great place to live and I highly recommend living here!

As for Junior year housing, the main option is called Ivory or a sorority or fraternity house. Housing Junior and Senior years are based on a lottery though. There are many options for off campus housing that are practically on campus. If you are a Junior though you most likely want to live in Ivory. It’s really clean and nice.

Well, thanks everyone and I hope this helps future GW students! :)
