We didn't buy the bedding from that company entering students will hear from, but I remember my D saying that a few kids on her floor in freshman year had them and that the quality was terrible. NMR is right that you can find XL sheets in lots of places, better quality and usually better prices! Yes, I would certainly recommend two sets of sheets but I would not recommend making the bed with two bottom sheets. If something happens to spill on the bed, having both sheets on the bed kind of defeats the purpose of having a backup. :)

Hi
My very first visit here...my son is a highschool sophomore who wants to go to Tisch in the film & television dept (Kanbar).
Just beginning my research!
Is there a traditional dorm that the filmmakers gravitate to?

HI
Im a french law student , Im going to NYU at the language american program for the spring semester
I am applying for a housing , i would like to ask you guys which are the best dorms at Nyu
I have choice with 7th Street , Alumni Hall , Carlyle Court , Gramercy Green , Palladium
As I am french , i don’t know anyone , so which are the best dorm to meet student

thank you for your answer

frenchla- my son lived in Palladium last year and loved it! It’s right in Union Square next to grocery stores, great restaurants, and shopping. That dorm also has a large gym on the bottom floor. He lived in a 2 bedroom suite that housed 2 students in each room for a total of 4 people. It has a kitchen with nice storage space and a nice common area with a table and 4 chairs and a couch and chairs. I hope that helps!

Personally, I really liked living in Carlyle. The rooms are probably the biggest of all the dorms you mentioned. They come with a kitchen as well. The only downside is that, in a 4 person, 2 bedroom suite, one of the rooms is in the common room, whereas the other room has a door. I lived in the common room-bedroom last year, and it’s honestly not bad at all. It’s actually ON Union Square, as opposed to Palladium which is just close to Union Square. It’s at most a 15 minute walk from all the major NYU buildings, and it has 3 laundry rooms.

I live in Coral Towers this year and I really wish I was still at Carlyle…

I’m a prospective NYU student, currently a HS Senior who applied ED.

All my research seems to point to Hayden Hall and Third North as the best Freshman dorms. If I remember correctly, Third North is a block away from Palladium, where there’s a gym and a cafeteria.

My D lived in Third North her freshman year and there is also food in that dorm. She loved living in that dorm.

A lot of the Freshman dorms have cafeterias. The closest dorm to campus is Weinstein, which has 3 cafeterias, is a 5 minute walk from the library, and a 10 minute walk from the Coles Gym, which, in my opinion is better than the gym at Palladium.

If you get in ED does that give you housing priority? That would be nice for you because otherwise you can easily not get your first choice or any choice. My daughter got assigned to a dorm that was not on her list at all but she has wonderful roommates and loves her floor so it worked out fine. Food and gym in house are great but the are not nearly as hard to come by as rehearsal space and pianos. If you end up somewhere without either (like my daughter did), you may find yourself wandering around in the wee hours looking for an open place to do your homework and practicing and that’s a lot easier to do if the space you are waiting for is in your dorm where you can just shoot down in your PJ’s. (Not that that has stopped her from running a few blocks to a neighboring dorm in her PJ’s but if the rooms are all taken, it’s just a bigger deal.)

Good luck with ED. Cool school.

Well Hayden and Third North are Freshman dorms… this person is looking at Upperclassman dorms, of which Palladium and Gramercy are generally considered the best. Palladium has prime location in Union Square and it has a dining hall and the gym. But Gramercy is the nicest dorm in NYU- it has granite and comes with a dishwasher and microwave and all of that kind of stuff. But it’s a bit farther away.

And no, ED doesn’t get priority. It’s lottery.

^I was actually responding to post #66. But if you are right that there is no priority for ED freshman for housing it’s really early to think about housing. It’s not entirely a lottery for freshman. You can list priorities but it doesn’t mean you get what you want. In any case I’d still recommend shooting for a dorm with rehearsal space of the poster is an MT.

I rememby my son talking about Grammercy and how nice it was and I don’t remember how he decided on Palladium. Anyway, if you apply for some of the exploration floors or special interest groups, you have a better chance of getting into a particular dorm. I know this is available for freshman but not sure about upper classmen. Weinstein is a great dorm with all the dining halls and location for freshman and during Sandy- it was one of two dorms that never loss power!

Perhaps something has changed at NYU since my D was a freshman but when she was one, ED freshmen had priority in dorm choices and while she applied RD, her roommate, whom she had known for years in theater in our own state, had been admitted ED and they did get their first choice dorm, which was Third North.

^I had sort of thought that as well but there is nothing about it that I can find anywhere on the NYU housing page that says that. Meanwhile though if you search CC on the subject what you find suggests that ED applicants perhaps apply for housing earlier but the actual assignment comes out at the same time that everyone else’s does without any placement priority. So who knows how it works.

If the ED kids no longer get housing priority, that is definitely a change in policy. When my was admitted ED, she got her choice of dorms, as did many we knew for several years after that. So, this would be a fairly recent change.

I certainly don’t claim first hand knowledge since my daughter was an RD applicant last year but all of last year’s chatter on the subject in CC last year suggested that the housing priority for ED no longer applies.

Confirming above. Child admitted ED last year and is a current NYU freshman. No priority housing for ED applicants last year and, am assuming, this is the policy from here on out.
