Does anyone know anything about Mexico - is it good to go there for spring break?

Regarding partying out of the country...think about Natalee Holloway. The US laws can't protect you in Mexico.

Never heard of her, but im gonna look it up!
So Mexico sounds very dodgy ( aka sketchy). thanks! its best to be vigilant.

I just read about the dissapearence of Natalee Holloway. Its very sad. Has she been found?
Nothing was aired here about her im sure there would have been a Dr Phil segment on her which i have missed, or it will be comming up, but i would like to know where were her friends that night??? I can say that i will not be going there.
Are there a lot of mexicans/hispanics in San Diego?
How far is San Diego from Mexico?
Socal, what has your daughter said about the safety on campus? That is the one thing that i am worried about.

Sounds like Bali to me. A tropical island a few hours away from Western Australia, very cheap.
However, they hate westerners and are always targeting them through suicide bombings. such ^%$#@ makes me angry.

Natalee was never found and the Aruban authorities were incompetent in the investigation, letting 3 boys go for a month before detaining them. The major suspect is the son of a prominent judge in Aruba and he is free now, going to school in the Netherlands. This was covered extensively here in the US and there has been no resolution. Natalee's amazing mother stayed in Aruba for months throughout the investigation to bring attention to the issue. What a tragedy. The FBI got involved and we sent search crews there to help find Natalee to no avail. The point is, if you go out of America, you have to be very careful. My daughter will not go to Mexico, although she knows people who do.

Regarding campus safety, there are definitely crimes on campus, but SDSU takes measures to best protect the students. The campus police has an escort service if you are not comfortable walking alone at night and they encourage everyone to use the service. On weekends, police presence is very strong. You just learn not to go out alone at night especially if you are a female.

You can have lots of fun, but you need to be as careful on a college campus as you would anywhere.

You might want to check out the school newspaper: "The Daily Aztec" http://www.thedailyaztec.com/ You can subscribe to get the e-mail version, or you can just go online to view it. Sometimes they have stats on campus crime.

Although its comforting to know there is security on campus - i am still skeptical about trusting someone because they have a badge on their shirt.
Its worrying to hear about crimes on campus, thanks for the link.
I was a bit reluctant to apply to study in the US for the reason of safety. Australia is very safe, there are maybe one or 2 break ins in the student village per year. Its going to be very different for me comming from an environment which is pretty much safe, to one where im always going to need an escort.
I cant believe those 3 obviously guilty guys were let free in mexico. such crap. Like i said, very similiar to Bali. Those who are behind suicide bombings get approximatly 5 years max in jail - and then there are innocent Aussies ( Shapelle Corby) who had had drugs planted in her bag and now faces 15 years in jail. It doesnt make sense.

Do you know if Zura is close to all the facilitites on campus? That is the campus im interested in at the moment, i hear its quite fun in there.

The Natalee Holloway case was in Aruba, which is in the Carribbean. It didn't happen in Mexico, but it was in another country and the laws are different.

Anyway, regarding safety, just make sure you are always with friends when you go out at night. The dorms are very secure. You have to have a key to get into the dorm and then you have to show your student ID card in order to go further than the lobby.

Zura is close to most of the other dorms and to the main dining commons. It has a reputation of being very fun.

Thanks for the info. You have been really helpful with answeing my questions. I really appreciate it.
If you ever need to ask someone about Australia, you know who to post it too. Cheers.

Ill be getting in touch with them on Monday regarding housing bc that still has not been sorted.
I dont understand why they close the dorms during spring break? Any ideas? My new yorker mate said - she doesnt know but most ppl go away.

Aussie, college dorms usually close down for Thanksgiving, winter break, and spring break. Most students go home or visit friends/relatives. I'm sure you will find a place to go for spring break. Maybe the SDSU international office has some suggestions. Good luck. Hope you get into Zura.

OK, im very interested in joining a sorority.
Please help!!
Is there a fee?
How do i join?
Any advice would be helpful, or any links..i have looked up a couple, but they dont explain much.
Cheers.

GAMBLING IN VEGAS-
Is there an age requirment? I heard that some places allow 18year olds to enter but not gamble? True?

Well, there is a casino about 20 minutes away from campus that allows 18 year olds to gamble. As far as vegas goes, this is illegal, but a fake ID usually works fine. They don't care so much on the gambling floor as long as you have money and your in their casino.

woo hoo- yeah, i heard that the US is pretty much slack on IDs. I hope that it is true.
Cheers for that.
Ill have to check out the casino.

Does anyone know if there is still campus housing available,.in particular, Zura?

PS I might be studying a semester abroad in australia next semster!

I just want to thank everyone on this site for answering my questions. I studied abroad at SDSU this year in the spring, 2006 semester.
I can honestly say, i had the time of my life.
I lived on campus- in the Zura dorm. Better known as 'the zoo'.

I did all the fabulous things any college student gets up to- yes partying and experiencing greek life- mexico (TJ and Rosarito), watching basketball games, hanging out at PB beach.(when i wasnt studying of course :)

I made so many friendships and lasting memories. A few friends have bought their ticket and are visiting me in Australia soon.
Funny how things turn out.

I was sad to leave, but i know i will be back there again soon!!!!!!!! SDSU is a great school. Go Aztecs!

Again- thanks for all your help guys.

xoxox

Saved by the bell~ DId you study abroad in Australia? Let me know if you need any help!

Hey, so I’m a Junior in high school right now, and have been planning on going to SDSU for a a while. But being that I’m all the way from Minnesota, I’m really gunna want to establish a ton of relationships there. I’m rather outgoing and don’t mind most people, where would you say is the best housing for me, in order to get to know a lot of people?
I also LOVE the ocean out there, what’s the best beach, in your opinion?

bumpppppp*

Any current students living in Zura. How is it?
