Dorms at UNC

can anyone give me impressions of the dorms at UNC, especially the new ones on South campus?

The four new dorms are virtually identical with the only variations due to terrain. Rooms are good sized averaging 11x18 with a large closet just inside the entrance that is divided into two halves. All furniture is movable and beds can be bunked or lofted. Every two rooms share a bath, but because of the in-room access/entrance, housekeeping does not clean these baths. Like most other UNC dorms walls and halls are an off white concrete block with an off white linoleum floor. All-in-all they are pretty stark and sterile on first glance, but they are far newer and nicer than other south campus dorms. There are study rooms and lounges on each wing.

It's hard to describe the "character" of them because they will obviously change from year to year. Last year Morrison South had a majority of sophomore and up residents and most freshman were either in the Honors program, or on some type of merit scholarship including some Moreheads and Robertsons. It was a great place for studying most any night and was not in general a rowdy place. This year, the character has done a 180 with a large number of non-honors freshman girls who are loud and party a lot. My son was a freshman last year and never had to leave his room to study. This year he has been in the library virtually every night.

With the opening of the Ramshead, dining is far better than at the old Chase dining hall so south campus residents don't have to travel to Lenoir to get good food, variety etc and there is also a recreation facility in the Ramshead as well. If you are going to be on south campus, they are good places to be.

I'd still suggest the high-rises, especially Hinton James, simply because it's easier to meet people and more fun. I don't have a problem with the small rooms.
