Dorms at USC

The Radisson dorm isn’t technically physically far from the rest of the freshman dorms, but socially, it still seems secluded. I don’t know, personally, I think the traditional freshman dorms (New/North, Birnkrant) are the way to go. I thought I wanted the whole private bathroom, hotel room thing, but the rooms are still normal dorm rooms (just bigger) and it’s hard to be social with your floor in the Radisson, from what I’ve heard, at least.

yeah i think it sounds kinda risky, to go as a freshman. (to be social)

it looks much nicer than dorms tho online at least. it seems like the dorms look kinda crappy like the beds…look hard but at radisson its probly pillowtop lol but idk im sure its fine.

That would be GREAT! But no, you get the same XL twin mattress as in all the dorms.

If you are looking for “nice” in terms of nice-looking and new-ish, look into Parkside IRC and Parkside Arts and Humanities. They are suite-style, fairly new, and beautiful. When you click here [Housing Options](http://housing.usc.edu/) you see a picture of Parkside Arts and Humanities on the housing homepage.

how do u only put part of what i said in a quote?

and really? they dont give u the radisson chain hotel appliances? do they have a pool? it has a pool on the actual website…but not listed on USC’s site. im probably not even gonna get into usc lol i shud probably stop wastin time figuring out dorm stuff for it. lol i did that with nyu and didnt get in. oh well…its good to know i guess…maybe they’ll have somethin like that elsewhere…maybe pepperdine! : ] i have a ?..do u think itd be better to go to community and transfer? even if i have a fairly high gpa and sat is 1850. well my gpa isnt high but its not LOW either. i have a 4.11 weighted…n 3.73 unweighted.

are dorms ever nice? like hilton hotel status? or are they ALL like that? i might as well live at home lol jk

you put the word “quote” in brackets at the beginning of the passage you are quoting and “/quote” in brackets at the end of the passage like this:

[ quote ]COPY AND PASTE THE PASSAGE YOU ARE QUOTING HERE [ /quote ]

Don’t put the space before and after the word “quote” and “/quote” - I added that so it would display. It ends up looking like this:

I’m a USC mom, so I haven’t lived in the dorms, but I my daughter was in Parkside IRC freshman year and Webb apartments sophomore year. To me they look great - and she is loving it. The online room tour doesn’t show you how the rooms look when everyone is moved in and all their stuff has put their personal stamp on their space. Most of the kids have the mattress toppers to make the beds more comfortable. You are going to love it at whatever great college you choose next April!

Good luck! (And feel free to try out the quotes - hint: use the “Go Advanced” tab next to “Post Quick Reply” to preview and edit your post.)

Parkside and Fluor are easily the nicest dorms on campus. Places like Marks Hall/Tower, Pardee, New/North and such are very very basic traditional dorms. Though New/North dorms do have a sink in the rooms, which I hear is nice. I lived in Pardee my freshman year and honestly, I wish I had chosen to go with Parkside.

@alamemom

woah thanx. yeah it seems like most kids love the dorms wherever they are. ive never heard anyone say they hate it. but when i went to visit NYU, the dorms kinda looked horrible. but then again, they showed us a TA’s room, so it wasn’t the real thing. and it was not decorated cuz no one was living there.

did ur daughter paint her walls? i wonder if most kids do. my parents would probly think its a waste of time if ur just gonna be there for a year, but i think its kinda worth it. i mean 365 days is a loong time. and i like to make things look pretty : ]

did u daughter also get a scholarship or anything? or do u pay the whole thing?

AHHHHHH!!! NO! There are some very specific rules about such things! There would be a long list of move-out charges if you painted anything!

When you move in they provide little packets of sticky-goo-stuff that is supposed to be the ONLY way you attach anything to the walls. Painting is definitely out. She brought along things to drape and hang (from window coverings, beds, etc.), carpets, throws, pillows, pictures of her little brother and sister… Everyone seems to find a way to personalize their space.

No, we don’t pay the whole thing. We are in California and so had the wonderful options of the UCs and, as much as we LOVE USC, would not have been able to justify paying double for USC. Yes, she was awarded scholarships and received financial aid in addition to the scholarships that brought the cost down to a bit less than UC Berkeley and a bit more than UCLA. Be sure to file the FAFSA and CSS/Profile before February 2nd - don’t miss financial aid deadlines!

When are you going to try quotes???

Yes, don’t paint your walls. You will get charged lots of money if you do. Before you move in you’ll get a packet with move-in information, it’l tell you what to bring and what not to bring, and what you can do to your room. Basically, sticky-tack is the only way to attach things to your wall, besides using the corkboard that they provide.

lol uhh ill try now : ]

i thought people could paint it if u just paint it white later. that sux. i guess i can buy posters for once lol (gossip girl posters : ])

my mom said we dont know if we can qualify for financial aid but we’re doing fafsa today. altho on my apps, i said no to needing need-based.

thats awesome that u brought the cost down more than UCs. do a lotta ppl do that or do most pay it on their own? evry1 ive talked to so far (3 ppl) that go to USC, have gotten full scholarships or at least some. another grl i know who went there has a dad thats a doctor so she probably pays it all.

do any dorms have hardwood floors? some in new york do (at the actual campus)

Nope, no hardwood floors that I know of in dorms. Just carpet, and tile in the bathrooms.

A lot of people who go to USC get significant financial aid money. I certainly do, which brings the cost down enough for me to attend.

Posters are definitely the way to go, just get enough to cover up all that wall you don’t want to see.

Great job with the quote, babygrl9205!

Be sure you are doing the 2010-2011 FAFSA. It is not available until January 1st, so if you are filling out a FAFSA today, it might be the 2009-2010 FAFSA, which is for the current academic year. Students entering Fall 2010 will need the 2010-2011 FAFSA.

Slightly off topic, but do y’all know where USC stands in terms of price, I would think it is probably top 10 most expensive schools, it’s ridiculous

It’s up there, but wasn’t in the top 25 in 2008-2009, so I’m not really sure where it stands exactly.

There are a few factors you have to consider though. It’s a prestigious university, so the tuition is rightfully, relatively expensive. Second, you’ll be living in LA, CA, one of the most expensive places to live just because it’s so crowded, so room and board WILL be expensive. Third, USC is private. Private schools in general just cost more because they don’t get money from the state. Fourth, USC has excellent financial aid. If you can’t pay for it, they cover 100% of financial need, with like 77% being in scholarships/grants, and the rest with loans and jobs, which isn’t nearly as bad as some schools that don’t cover need, and what they do cover is majority in loans/jobs, so you’re basically paying for it yourself anyways. Fifth, USC is relatively generous with scholarships and the such, so if you are set academically, it can easily end up being cheaper than other colleges.

so basically, sticker price is almost never actual cost, as it usually isn’t with most colleges. You have to look at many factors when considering how expensive a school ACTUALLY is. USC is actually cheaper than UMich for me considering I’m OOS for both, and USC’s tuition isn’t affected by residency, BECAUSE it’s private, which is very, very nice for me.

Ya I’m also applying to Michigan, the OOS cost is outrageous…I thought Texas was bad 44k for everything OOS, Michigan is like 56

@ alamemom

thanx lol i didnt even check to see if it worked when i did it lol omg i didnt know that it wasn’t the 2009-2010 one! good thing we didnt finish filling it out! im only on 3rd step (out of 10). and my mom did it twice but didnt save it or sumthing…idk but we still didnt finish it. thanx for tellin me that!

also, i totally forgot that USC can end up being cheaper than UCs lol my parents CAN pay for it, but theyd rather me go to a UC cuz its cheaper…

however im most likely going to a private skool unless for some wierd reason i get into ucla (wich will probly not happen) and i dont get into other top schools of my choice. thennn i might consider it. lol so can we get financial aid if we earn more than 200,000? itd still be nice to save money : ]

there are a lot of factors to financial aid. After your parents file their taxes for '09, fill out a FAFSA, and see what your FEC (Family Expected Contribution) is, and if it’s higher than tuition, you wont get anything, but if it’s lower, USC will cover the difference.

Though I kind-of doubt it @$200k a year

we wouldnt even get a little bit? well that sux. cuz for 2008, our adjusted gross in come was -70,000. idk what that means but it sounds like we would get financial aid if they see thaat. its cuz we invest in our business but idk how much it will be for 2009. i could ask my parents but its kinda being nosy lol idk and for 2006 our AGI was 180,000. so idk what this year will be. altho idk if AGI decides it. oh well whatever lol

it’s not really being nosy when it comes to costing or saving you tens of thousands of dollars, I’m not exactly a financial aid expert by any means, but you could post on the financial aid forum and ask your question and you’ll get a more official answer, they usually offer very good advice and information. Sorry I can’t help

it’s not really saving money lol, just borrowing, but ya I doubt you get any aid with 200k+, then again it all depends on how many people rely on the money etc
