Dorms for incoming freshman

Can any current students describe each of the dorming situations? I know freshman housing consists of kissam, branscomb, and vanderbilt hall/barnard hall. Which one is the most popular?

i talked about dorms here: <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=112898%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=112898</a></p>

An old thread on dorms:

In short: Branscomb is the most popular.

The dorm reputations are: Kissam kids study all of the time, and keep their doors closed. Vandy/Barnard kids study a lot, but keep their room doors open so people walking by can stop and chat a little. Branscomb: Study? What's that?
I am a Kissam person myself, and really love it. My floor is something of an exception to the general Kissam floor though; about half of the guys on my floor are heavy partiers. I don't party, but I can hang out with the guys, go eat with them, etc., and when the partying starts, I have my single room to go to, and sleep, study, whatever. It's nice to have your own hideout sometimes. I highly reccomend requesting a single as a freshman; after all, you still have three more years to get a double if you decide you just hate the single. I think getting a single will really help your grades the first year. Lots of my friends who had doubles last semester were having a tough time with roommates, and there is enough other junk to compete with grades even without an obnoxious roommate.

The thing about freshman housing is that you don't have a say in which dorm you are put into. You can decide if you want a single or a double, but even then you may not get your first choice. Last year I lived in a single in Vandy/Barnard, and there were a few girls on the hall who requested doubles, yet ended up in singles-- and they loved it! I think that there are positives and negatives to being in each. I liked having a single last year (i'm not a partier so living in brancomb was not very appealing) but what I especially liked was that I could choose who of the 30 girls on my hall I wanted to be my closest friends, opposed to having one of them living with me... I ended up spending many nights in friends rooms on the hall just for the company... I think that on a floor of singles frehsman year people WANT to get to know each other and therefore leave doors open and make the effort... in doubles, it is quite possible not to know the people at the other end of the hall because if you have your roommate, it is not as necessary to leave the room to find companionship. However, this year I live in a double and love having the constant company! It is what you make of it, in the end.

schoolforme is definately right, you really have no say of where you end up. i requested a double, was all ready to meet my roommate and be in branscomb, but i ended up in kissam quad. but me tell you IT RULES. I know almost everyone (exception of some girls on the other floor) in my entire dorm. We honestly go to the frats to get away from how crazy our dorm gets, everyone parties, everyone drinks, everyone is social and friendly, and everyone gets their work done (most of the time). So, whatever you hear about how everyone in kissam keeps their door shut, it's not true.
