With the decisions for RD just a few days away and the ED results already in for a while now, has anyone given any thought to their first choice for freshman residential halls? I read through the thread on the dorms here on CC and visited the Columbia wiki and school website that has pictures of the dorms, but I'm still stuck between John Jay and Carman.... is anyone out there having any of the same problems?

I’m a current student (Class of 2014). I live in a John Jay single. I would definitely go for John Jay over Carman. John Jay is social, but there is still lots of privacy with our single rooms. Your room is a viable study space in John Jay, avoiding what we like to call “Butler camping” (essentially living in the library when you have a lot exams or assignments). Oh, and we have a dining hall right in our building!

If you’re looking for a party atmosphere just head over to your friends’ rooms in Carman (trust me, you will know SOMEBODY in Carman), although true Columbia students know that the only real parties on campus are in the EC high rise dorms or frat houses or even off campus.

All and all, the only drawback to John Jay living is the bathroom situation. You share your bathroom with everyone of your sex on your floor. They can get kind of messy, but the girls’ bathroom is generally cleaner. The bathrooms really aren’t that big of a deal though. Good luck!

Check the helpful threads post. There are tons of housing threads already.
