I never thought Tulane's dorms looked bad; they look like most any other dorms I have seen. I think Tulane updates their dorms regularly as my son lived in Monroe 4 years ago and it had all new furnishings that year and has been redone twice since. Most of Tulanes dorms are doubles, at least for the freshman.

My son attends Tulane--was also in Monroe last year. He loved that dorm.
His room was a double and really pretty nice--natural brick walls on two sides of the room. The building itself wasn't that great--ie bathrooms, common rooms, etc. Sharp was worse, according to him, because the bathrooms tended to overflow and the rooms hadn't been recently renovated, as had Monroe.

After having done over 20 college visits (D is in college now too), I would agree that some of Tulane's dorms definitely aren't at the top of the list. However, they are certainly better than some we saw (Univ of GA-where S went for his Katrina semester, for one). Tulane has several options, though, and I understand that Wall is fantastic (brand new).

Bottom line--if getting a large, especially nice dorm is really important to you, I wouldn't choose Tulane (unless you guarantee you can get into Wall).
For my son, Tulane was the ONE, no matter the dorms.

Hahah, he didn't like Monroe because of the rooms, I can guaruntee you that!

The dorms for freshman aren't nice. In fact, they suck. (Except for that new one!). Once you're an upper classman, it gets better. Irby and its ilk are also crappy, but Willow, Mayer, Patterson, and presumably the dorm that replaced Doris are nice.

I always described my S' dorm (Butler) as "scuzzy," but I said it affectionately. The room was ok, sounds just like the one Pokey described in Monroe, but the bathrooms, halls, etc. (except the newly re-done part after Katrina) were shopworn. But my S loved that dorm, chose it after overnighting there on a visit, and cared less about the aspects I saw as blah.

If you want a great dorm, I'm not sure I've seen any better than Wall Residential College at Tulane. Freshman are in there - I think you have to write an essay or something to get in. Qualifies for "Dorms are Like Palaces" imo.

My D just moved into Monroe this weekend. While it is certaintly not a palace it is not that bad. The room has lots of windows, lots of closet space and the brick walls are nice. The rug was in good shape. It was way nicer than my son's freshman dorm room at Bentley.

Claysoul:
It's true--S really did like his dorm room in Monroe because of the brick and the nice view he had. Plus he had a great roommate last year. He ended up in Irby over Lagniappe (fire on top floor at Monroe) and is there now as a sophomore. Rooms are definitely larger, but he really liked his Monroe room better. Newer furniture in Monroe too.

He loves the Irby location though...closer to stuff he cares about---like a girlfriend in the same building :)

Monroe is awesome! There are people from Sharp, J.L, and what not coming to Monroe all the time. Fun stuff here!
