What living communities are you choosing when signing up for dorms and meal plans? Doesn't look like you can choose buildings.

I thought it was a very clever way of assigning housing. After everybody chooses their community, they assign buildings based on space needed. There are several options that appeal to D, including the German speaking, or International, or (if she gets in) the Honors community. I'd love to hear from some current or former students about what they think of the various communities.

I lived in the Honors dorm (Tappan) freshman year, and I'm currently in one of the upper-class Honors dorms. Tappan was an absolutely amazing experience; I would definitely recommend Honors housing. I think Tappan will be Harrison/Honors and Emerson will be Oxford Scholars. Both are air conditioned and have huge basements-- truthfully, I liked Tappan better than my current building (although the location of my current dorm is absolutely amazing). Apparently the German and International dorms will be on Western, which some students may like but others would hate.

Tappan is honors?

Wow, that's a switch from 100 years ago when I was a freshman (oops, "first year student") and lived there when it was all female and our chant was "T-A-P P-A-N, Tappan Tappen we love men!"

Sorry, just HAD to do it.

I chose HELM -Healthy Ex. Living Mgt or something like that (although i was an honors student)....so i could meet more people.

HELM is on South Quad, near the rec, the dorms aren't the best, but the people are.

More that might be helpful.

It is looking more and more likely that Miami will be my D's choice. We haven't begun to look at housing options yet. To me, the most obvious would be either Oxford Scholars or the German house. My concern with the German house would be drinking / parties. Can anybody give me any feedback on that? She will be a music / languages double major (most likely), so will be over on the artsy side of campus a lot anyway (which is where the German house is, I think?)

She is not a partier, and would prefer to be around "calmer" people. Can anybody offer suggestions as to appropriate housing for her?

Personally, I'd choose the Oxford Scholars dorm because it is VERY nice. The rooms are a decent size, it's air conditioned, and the basement is fabulous. I'm not positive which dorm the foreign languages will be in this year; they are moving it next year. Even though it's a foreign language dorm, students do not speak in their foreign language often, if at all. I'm pretty sure it will be down on Western, and your D will be much closer to the performing arts building and the rest of campus if she's in the OS dorm.

Bumping this thread because of the new thread about dorms - overlap of info.
